Closely following the Hospitalier bust this is the next one to leave the shelf of shame, I think this was started in 2014 and was planned to be finished in July 2016 for the 100th Anniversary of the Somme but needless to say it didn't make it so I am really glad that I have completed it now.

Painted in Oils over Acrylic but because I had left it for so long and everything had dried out resulting in the colouring looking completely wrong I had to go back and touch everything up, some of this was done will oils however I found myself using some acrylic washes to subdue the brightness of the oils, I eventually used good old weathering, mud, and blood to distract the eye away from the many imperfections, I know the pics aren't great, blasted IPhone, but I am now onto the next shelf of shame subject (ROMAN) that was started way back before the WW1 bust.

Nice to see it finished Terry. Must be a relief!
He’s come up nicely & weathering helps make him look the part, with the moustache adding a distinctive touch.
Good luck with next project.

Hi Terry

It might have been languishing for a while but that's come out nicely, I like the variety in colours on the uniform and equipment

...nice moustache as well

Thanks for sharing this

Looking forward to seeing more from the shelf of shame

This looks really good, Terry.

Feathering in the oils over a dried prior oil application works really well for me as long as I don't introduce any thinner. If there are any boofs I'm not seeing them, you're good!

Thanks guys for looking and your very nice comments, I always steered away from so called modern military uniforms basically because I am an oil painter and trying to mix WW1/WW2 uniform colours was very challenging, plus they dried with a sheen and I always wanted a Matt finish on this type of subject, so I just stuck to Medieval and Ancient subjects which I love anyway and you can get away with colour mixing issues, however I visited the WW1 battlefields in France and Belgium in 2006 and returned home with a new passion and just had to get myself a figure or bust to remind me of what I saw and what I need to remember and I just had to get this one over the line.
I have been back several times including the 100th Anniversary of the Somme and I will be back over in April, I have a German soldier Bust to accompany this one that I started to clean up last night so I hope to bring some inspiration home with me again to drive me along with this.

Very nice work on your figure bust, and congrats on getting an old project completed. It’s too bad that Young Miniatures only has a few WW1 offerings compared to more popular eras. Beautiful Strat, by the way. Is it an American Fender?

Hi Nap its a printed vinyl wrap I have an original print of the 36th Ulster Division going over the top 1st July 1916, I had an old Fender Stratocaster (cheap copy out of Argos) guitar that was lying gathering dust and starting to show signs of rust, I had a brainwave and set out to design the size of the print so that you would see most of the battle-scene and get the idea once all the bits and bobs were fitted back onto the guitar, saved the artwork onto a file and emailed it off to dare I say it EBAY where a company produced the wrap in a stretchy type of vinyl that can be worked into the curves, I design the artwork for the pick guard and that is also printed vinyl, then it just had to be back-lite with poppy red LED's.
Like some other PF members I had an ancestor who died at the Somme or during WW1, he was in the 36th Ulster Division and I suppose the guitar and the Bust are my tribute not only to him but to all who fell in the Great War, if anyone has an interest Google 36th Ulster Division, very interesting history going back many years before the Great War, certain elements pop up in the BBC series Peaky Blinders and many of their founding members would have been building the Titanic in the shipyard in Belfast.
Thanks for looking NAP.

Hi Gary I know that there are all types of Strats, American, Mexican etc but I wouldn't have clue which type this one is, it was getting into a bit of a state so the wife wouldn't let me put a guitar on the wall in the wee garden bar but I knew that if I came up with something to do with Poppies and Remembrance then I had a chance and it worked, lately I tried to put a White Gibson Flying V up and she has told me to clear off ;).
Keep your WW1 projects coming, they are brill.

Lovely work Terry, the 'tash is a nice touch but I really love the expression you've worked into the face. It also reminds me that my chap appears to have waxed his eyebrows off for a bet, I'd better fix that at some point.
