Hi,

I've the following problem:
I paint yellow metals with printer ink, let it dry and then apply a thin layer of varnish.
But after sometime the yellows get dark and dull.
How can I avoid this, because the Guard golden buttons may never be dark and dull on a walking out dress/uniform.

Cheers,
Paulo

Dont varnish it.

I also use printer ink (sometimes with Liquin).
But I dont varnish and I dont have this problem.

Paulo:

I'm with Jean Paul. I generally don't use varnish over Printer's inks, relying on Liquin or Cobalt Drier instead . It's obviously a component of the varnish (poss resin or shellac) that is tinting the ink. On the other hand, I have applied Gunze Sanyo smoke or clear yellow to purposely achieve this tinted effect

Paolo:
Apologies, you are right. Brand confusion  :

Had to go to the supply box and check it out.
Gunze Sanyo Smoke Grey
Tamiya Smoke (X-19) and Clear Yellow (X-24)

I tend to use the Tamiya paints for this

Yes. I have experienced the same thing. Don't apply any varnish or coat over the printers ink if you can avoid.

I just add the ink to some linseed oil and cobalt drier. Works nicely for me. :)

Cobalt drier is a drying agent. Ink is the pigment. Linseed oil is the carrier. Need a drier component to the mix to get it to... well... dry! I should also mention that if you add more than a drop or two of the cobalt drier, that seems to darken the gold color, too.

Here is a neat little article that may help you.
