Great figure, the film was shot for the natural settings in a very beautiful city of France, La Rochelle!

The site also served for shot Indiana Jones No. 1

And for the record, season 2 of the same name series is also coming back to the same location this year for filming

The movie ist based on this autobiographic novel by Leutnant Lothar-Günther Buchheim, who was Kriegsberichter (war correspondent) abord U-96...:




Here Buchheim together with Kapitänleutnant Hinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock aboard U-96 - they were close friends...:




The real "der Alte", Kapitänleutnant Hinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock...:



Hinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock came from my hometown Bremen. There also he died in 1986.

Great movie and a fine likeness of Lehmann-Willenbrock

Great movie, got a real feel for the claustrophobic world of subs. I remember the author on TODAY. He kept telling the interviewer people would have to read the book for more information. Not the best type of person to be interviewed. I did, however, read it.
