Hi to one and all

Legion miniatures continue to treat us with releases and I was lucky enough to get this one ( as well as others including foot figures recently which I will share whenever I can )

The subject of this release is a famed Russian general highly regarded in Russia even now for his outstanding bravery ...namely PIOTR BAGRATION

b.jpg

Note: above is a Z brush picture

Lets have a litte bit of background on him:

His military service began in the age of 17 in 1782 as a sergeant of the Caucasian Musketeer regiment.

In the rank of General-Major he took part in the Italian campaign of Suvorov in 1799.

In the Russian-Austrian-French war of 1805 he showed himself as a talented commander of the rear-guard.

In 1805 he distinguished himself in the bloody battle at Shengraben

Kutuzov promoted him to the rank of General-Lieutenant and rewarded him witn the Order of St.George of the 2nd Class.

In 1809 in the rank of General of Infantry was appointed the commander of the Moldavian Army

At Borodino in 1812 under the command of Bagration infantrymen and artillerymen beat off seven attacks one after another.

In the eighth attack Bagration was wounded very seriously: a shell-splinter splintered his left hip.

He continued to command and didn't leave the battle till the loos of blood had weakened him finally.

He died on September,12, 1812 of this wound in Simy village in Vladimir gubernia. At July,5 1839 his remains were reburied in the Borodino Field near the memorial to the heroes of the war of 1812.

Bagration took part in many campaigns, wars and battles.

For his courage, bravery and military skills he was rewarded with many Russian and foreign Orders and arms: the gold sword decorated with diamonds with the inscription "For courage".

Prep

Legion have gained a extremely high reputation with their releases in respect of the minimal prep needed ...it has continued here with this release

  • 2 castings post to remove from underneath torso and a very fine casting line
  • Remove a tiny bit of excess resin where lower arm meets torso
  • Casting post from under neck to remove and fit head
  • Make up 2 part base after removing excess resin and small flashing ( if you choose to use this)
General Comment
  1. There is a lot of intricate medal work on this ....and no problems with casting lines going through any detail
  2. Casting is a very high quality
  3. Resin used is smooth and with no blemishes :)
Again the parts were in a nice laser cut box with a painted version of the piece on the lid , inside parts were sandwiched between foam layers and held in a resealable clear bag

On to the resin

General thoughts
  1. Smoothly cast all over with no pin holes
  2. All details are crisply cast
  3. Build accuracy is spot on
Head

As we have said in the past the face is the one thing that must be good .....ia this one ????....you bet , a really good sculpt

The distinctive nose shape , nostrils are well styled and not filled in , lips are closed together , a good strong chin with the ears being well shaped

Good cheek features with the same applying to the eyes , with upper and lower eyelids well done , the pupils are nice;y shaped making the painting so much easier

Above the eyes quite full eyebrows raised in shaping , again as seen in pictures

The really well worked area is the hair and the side whiskers , every curl and twist is in place , allowing painting of each curl to be done ...when finished the effect will be just great ...just look at the pictures !!

Torso

Where to start .......folds and creases are not overworked which is good to see , the back is cut high to just below the level of the shoulder , the resin being shaped nicely underneath that , leading down to a shaped piece that the base pieces fit to

Across the chest there is a sash ...a challenge to paint to get the effect but enjoyable ...what is something I like is that the shaping of the awards, crosses etc are showing underneath .

The sash has folds where it meets the epaulette with the edges being sharp and in scale in depth

There are numerous awards flowing across the chest and they are really a pleasure to look at , all the details are there and cleanly edged , the pictures will show this better ...suffice to say I AM IMPRESSED

On the shoulders we have the epaulettes , well sculpted and cast details include a rope cording , with the hanging fringes again being really well done ...and they all sit well and natural onto the shoulders

The collar was a area I had my doubts about surviving the transit as its very well edged and high ...but it was fine ....and really is another area where casting has brought out the skill of the sculptor , nice edging and the oakleaves are all well shown

Base
Legion Bagration 022.jpg
Consisting of 2 parts with the T piece fits onto the underside shaping with the circular part fits against the curve .....making this base:

( this picture is from the previous review here: https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/marshall-konstantin-rokossovsky-from-legion-miniatures.203237/) but the base fits the same !!

Final Thoughts

Do I like it ...absolutely..... a pleasure to be able to share this , plenty of exquisite detailing all well cast and with the minimal of prep , allowing you to get straight on with the painting and enjoy this high quality piece

There are others in "The Greatest Men" series .....and I am pleased to say not only Napoleonic

As always I have enjoyed the review hope you have found it interesting and constructive:)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED(y)

Lovely looking kit. If I did not have the IRBIS 75mm kit, this one would be on my list for sure. Oh yes, excellent review as always Nap.

If only I wasn’t dedicated to 54mm…

Jeff
Excellent piece, very good likeness.

Irbis do an excellent 75mm figure of him for those of us/you who like our soldiers to have legs.

I wonder how much better these super castings would be in a high quality metal compound ,as nice as it is when blown up to the size in the pictures you do start to see a lot of imperfections ,off course this is nit picking
but I do tend to compare all with Metal models quality

A very good point Ron and thank you for commenting ....it would be interesting to see and compare blown up pics of a metal version ....everyone to their own preference of course

Just a quick remark for those willing to paint the bust - please do not use the (most famous) posthumous portrait of Bagration by Georges Dawe from the military Gallery of the Winter Palace.
The potrait is incorrect (like most of the series) - mainly because it shows 1817-pattern uniform (single breasted) instead of 1809 (double breasted)
