Good stuff Del! I've just bought one of Mercury's Landsknecht trio and this will be very useful. My re-enactment era was fortunately 20th Century, so I didn't need a background in tailoring.

I was one of these people who always thought re-enactors were a bit naff.
This changed years ago in a pub in York where I fell in with a group of viking enthusiasts whose knowledge was more than impressive. The attention to detail was nothing short of astonishing, many of them could have written a doctorate level thesis on aspects of viking life. One woman in particular knew everything about norse domestic life, weaving, farming, cooking, in other words the stuff that really makes the world go round.
I was pleased to contribute to their info resource my limited knowledge / take on the forgotten battle of Renfrew.
This was IMO pivotal insofar as the defeat and death of Somerled, Lord of the Isles, halted the risk of Norse expansionism into most of mainland Scotland.

I have to say that, of all the re-enactment genres, the WW2 period is populated by and large by folk who want to dress up as soldiers. There doesn't seem to be that level of enthusiasm for the history of it, unlike, as you say, Vikings for example. I have met numerous Viking re-enactors and I agree, they are "living history" in its fullest sense. The Roman groups are very good too. I remember at Military Odyssey some years ago talking at length with a Roman surgeon (who was in real life an accountant). He had all the kit and several dummies representing wounded legionaries, which he demonstrated on. Absolutely fascinating. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the event, WW2 dressers were rushing around firing off blanks like it was Guy Fawkes. Heady days mate.
