After several months spent in fantasyland I decided to make a trip back into the mainstream of our hobby with FeR's 5th New York Zouaves bust.

At the Battle of Gaines Mill, part of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, the 5th New York Zouaves, aka Duryea's Zouaves, lost 332 of the approximately 535 men engaged. Including 2 missing and presumed dead at least 121 of the casualties were killed outright or died of their wounds. It was the greatest battle fatality rate sustained by any Federal infantry unit during the war.

Kit consists of only 4 parts, well cast with little cleanup to be done, most of which was time spent carefully straightening the extremely fragile socket bayonet.

Finally had a chance to get back to the Zouave. Not entirely happy with his face ....but this is the 4th iteration and at some point you just have to say enough. Some of the molded detail is soft, particularly on his mustache and goatee. Don't know why. Maybe the mold is getting a little worn? Anyhow here he is...

Nice flesh tones, and you can always go back later to add more if you wish.
It'll definitely look better when you start on the uniform.

The face looks pretty good to me. I agree with Simon, paint more of the uniform and see how it looks then, because your perception of it will change.

Fair one, it happens and in my experience it's either take a break or it hits the wall at a rapid rate of knots, so good choice.

Cheers and merry Christmas Simon
