Jim,
Looking very good so far. If this hasn't been mentioned by others in another thread somewhere, it's really good to have profile shots to compare to when working on a sculpt of a specific person. If you only have pictures taken from the front, even if you copy them exactly, sometimes it'll still look "off" because you don't have the angles and planes of the face quite right (and that's something you can determine from a side shot).
People told me that and I ignored it at first to be honest, but it turned out to be very true.

Very true! The Little Hand (indian bust) sculpt was based on a single straight-on picture (none other available). I learned real quick that a profile is essential (for me at least). Never leave home without it now. Very good advice. I will be posting some updates on Hank this weekend hopefully. How's your sea captain bust (sorry forgot the exact subject) coming along? Love to see some pics of your progress. From what I saw in Atlanta it looked very promising.

I haven't worked on it at all since returning from Atlanta. I have been devoting time to a new hockey figure. Actually, how do I get myself an individual thread like you fellas have to post pictures?

Hey James,GREAT job on the face ;I can't wait to see it painted ! Since you asked,perhaps a little more definition of the figure's facial creases would be needed here to conform more to the sketch of the person.(although I may be wrong since I'm just judging by the photos alone ) Just my 2 cents worth.Cheers !

Hey Jim - I'm not sure exactly what, but something about the cap looks slightly off to me (could be the picture of course though). It might be how the peak connects to the cap itself on the outside edges. Were you planning on trimming it down?

Kenneth, Hank (and negros in general) does not have very well defined features so I was being purposefully 'rounded'. This does not mean that more definition is not needed. I will keep your observation in mind as I proceed. I've included a couple of reference shots of Hank I'm working with.
Francesca, I agree with your observation on the hat - looks a little too much like a batting helmet instead of a soft cap. I will be trimming it down and adding more indentations where the cap sits up off the head.

Gordy, got a question for you... I'm not happy with the teeth (on my sculpt, not the pics below. ). Any comments/suggestions? I'm not sure if it's the teeth themselves or the anatomy of the mouth that's off. Looks like maybe the teeth are too far forward? (This question is open to anyone who would like to comment, I singled out Gordy because I love the 'teeth' work he did on his pirates. ) I can post better pics if needed.

Often, in a smile expression, the corners of the mouth pinch and tuck in, and the teeth are on a tighter oval inside the head. I would experiment with cutting the teeth in just the corners a tiny amount at a time and define the distinction of the teeth and give the cheek/smile some seperation and dimension.
The smile Hank has in the photo you posted (the one on the right) Hank is sporting a "whats-that-smell-smile" that is the kinda of smile where the upper lip moves vertically with little lateral motion, and the nostrils flare, Tom Cruise is another person that does this type of smile.

The problem is NOT in the teeth. It's in the angle and position of the lower jaw. It deals with the 'facial slope'. Will not waste your time any further explaining it here (the workbench).

Precisely why I post profiles...
Please don't ever hesitate to intervene with ANY observations you may have. I welcome them! My goal is not to be merely a decent sculptor, but one day a very good sculptor. It may be years down the road, but that's the goal. Because of the comments and critiques from yourself and others on this site, I have been able to get further along in a short time than I could ever hope to be without it!
