Snowballs are banned!

On December 31, 1472, the magistrate of the city of Amsterdam...

... publishes the following decree:

"Nobody is allowed to throw snowballs," says the ordinance: "neither girls, nor women, nor men."

Original text:

"Nyemant en moet met sneecluyten weren't maecht yet wijff still manspersoen."

The hustle and bustle that gets wilder from year to year, in which adults obviously also take part, has been a thorn in the side of the magistrate for a long time!

The main reason for the snowball ban is the increase in glass damage, especially in the city's narrow streets.

Back then, pane glass was difficult to obtain and very expensive! Many small discs have to be made individually and then painstakingly assembled with lead to form a large disc...:

It would also be subtle to note that the main culprits, namely the boys, are completely missing from the list of those who are no longer allowed to throw snowballs...

It is not known whether the ban was observed.

So - and now I would like to thank everyone for reading along and wish you all a harmonious turn of the year and a good - and above all peaceful! - 2023!

I enjoy reading these little snippets of history, thanks for posting them Martin.

A happy new year to you and your family too.

Cheers Martin
