I have just started this figure (75mm) of Colonel Meuziau, 5th Hussars 1808. It is from Figurinitaly.
I have decided to try NMM on the braid, hence the barrel sash has been started to see what it looks like. I have dry brushed a little gold braid metal colour to get a shine but not happy. I have also started on the left sleeve but not happy with it so I will paint that again.
I thought the last figure I did was a pain with the braid but that was easy compared with this one.

If you want metallic mixed in with your NMM, an approach that has worked for me is to wash some highly diluted gold ink over the painted lace. You can still see the painted shading but it leaves random gold metallic flecks. Worth trying out on a piece if card to get the right opacity and dilution.

Thank you for the information Colin, I have used a diluted burnt umber ink but I think it's too dark. Will try another shade of brown.
I will go with the metallic mixed in the paint and as you say, try on a piece of card first.
 
Lovely figure but you're right that lace work looks daunting, it's coming along nicely between the pictures. I think the NMM/TMM approach will work really well. Also like the ornamentation on the shako, those golden rings look ace.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement, I am getting there but there is no end of braid.
I have that reference picture and a few more.
Onwards and upwards.

Bob. Just to clarify my approach is to wash diluted gold ink over the dry shaded underpainting, not mix it into the paint. This allows the metallic flecks to be far more visible.
 
You are doing a great job Bob. So much better than I could do. Like you, I feel that my work is not good enough, so I paint for pleasure in the knowledge that perfection is the killer of creativity and enjoyment. I look forward to seeing the final result knowing that it will be very good indeed.

Thank you all for the great words of encouragement, I too paint for pleasure, I don't really paint for competitions but enjoy the buzz for the ones on here.
Chrisr, I am also ex infantry (ATGW) platoon I left in 78. The user nickname Viking Bob is a reference to my old mob (The Vikings) Royal Anglian regt.
