Another quickie update. i'm still just blocking in the elements of the painting. I still have a little ways to go to establish the values. I'm now a little further along with the painting and have the tent and camp chair blocked in.

Great work Gary. We're all very excited about this work. Can't wait to see the finished piece. I hope we can have the original at the Atlanta Show as part of the APG display.

Gary,
It is amazing.
I wouldt i could paint like this. Are you painting in aquarel or gouache??
When it is aquarel i can only say that you managed this difficult kind of painting awesome.

Marc, Thank you. It's done in acrylics. I still may use some gouache but the painting will most likely be done completely in acrylics.~Gary

Rafa, Thank you, but no I'm not. Aside from admiring his ability as a historical artist, admiration is about as close as I'll ever get.~Gary

Another quikie update. still blocking colors in. The initial layer of blue represents the midtone of the uniform.~Gary

Here's another update. I think I'm about done on the tents. I colored the main one about 4-5 different ways it seems. The contrasts are not as sharp in person. I blocked in the backedground figures and the trick is to keep them simple. The big tree was fun to do also. I played around with that a lot too. The next step is to add a lot of various colored blades of grass and some stones and what not in the dirt.

A little more progress puts me a little closer to actually painting Fairchild. The soldiers playing cards are about done. I may do a little more shading, although I think it best to keep distant figures simple. Notice the smoking cap worn by the player on the left. I have a little more detailing to do on the grass, stones, etc.
