A little bit further on with this figure. I painted the gray coat yesterday and the cap peak and leather straps today. I prefer to paint wet on wet but I may add additional shadows. Comments and criticism on the coat are welcome.

I'm with Stephan on this one. Very nicely done, but I think the shadows could be pushed just a tad more. Could be the pics washing them out a bit though. Looking really good so far Keith, keep us posted!

Thank you all for chiming in here.

I think the comments about the dark shadows especially under the arm as well as the lighting "washing" some of the contrast out are spot on.

I try to work 100% wet on wet but will add the shadows under the arm.

Wish I knew more about photography to help with the contrast. :(

Nicely graduated shading is it in oils?If so what is your palette?
One small point I appreciate it may be an undercoat but the final colour of the collar should be buff (almost white) rather than yellow

Gary - Thanks for the validation on the darks.

Peter - Yes. It is in oils. The coat has an acrylic base of neutral gray + Prussian Blue. The oil base in Paynes gray + Lukas Flesh #4 + tiny dab of Cad Red Medium.. First shade is Paynes gray, 2nd shade is Paynes Gray + Raw umber.
1st high is base + more Lukas Flesh and bit of titanium white, 2nd high is 1st high + bit more titanium white.

Heck, don't know what to say about the collar. I looked at a few paintings on the internet. They kinda sorta looked yellow to me. Not sure that I can correct at this point.

Kieth,
I'm sure you can go back on the collar and make it buff. Once the yellow is completely dry just go back in with a good base color and work it back. The yellow should give the collar a nice "yellowed" look unhdeneath any way! Keep it up!

Hi Keith,
Depending on the time Stonewall,s cap should be either dark blue or grey with a small dark blue band at the base with a gold stripe. The blue cap is his VMI cap and the other is to go with the new uniform presented to him by J.E.B Stuart who was fed up with his scruffy appearance he did,nt like the grey cap but wore it as it was a gift from his wife. This was the uniform he was wearing when wounded at Chancellorsville.
Regards
George :)

thanks for the info on colour mix I'll try it out on a 1st virginia cavalry figure I'm painting
With regard to the collar you should really try and change it confederae facing colours were yellow cavalry sky blue infantry red artillery & buff general officers and staff

Dang! Why didn't you guys tell me all this stuff about the collar and cap before I started! ;)

I am getting ready to prime the Beneito 11th NY Fire Zouave. Red shirt.... blue fez.... What am I missing?

Seriously... Thanks for the comments and pointing out the cap and collar color info. That is why I asked!
