Vallejo paint mix for French Horizon Blue

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum & wondered if anyone has any suggestions for a Vallejo Model Colour paint mix for French Horizon Blue for WW1 uniforms? I've looked through their colour chart & can't find a ready-mixed shade.
I'm aware that Horizon Blue varies in shade from almost sky blue to a steely blueish-grey, depending on cloth batch, quality & manufacturers. I'm painting Jon Smith Modellbau & Nemrod WW1 figures.

I did a Jon Smit figure to. Excellent figures by the way.
As i'm a oilpainter i can only talk for that but i think there are also colors in acrylic with this names.
Base color is a grey mixed with a mid blue. (cobalt blue)
Highlight with more light blue (cerulean blue)
High highlight ad white to this highlight mix.
Shade with base + orange
Darker shade with sepia or a dark brown.

Horizon Blue

Hi Chris,

I use Vallejo acrylics and have found that Andrea Blue, darkened with Oxford Blue with a little bit of Ivory added, makes a very decent "horizon blue" for French Poliu.

Here are a few photos of Poliu uniforms I took two weeks ago in the museum at Verdun. I hope it helps.

Hi Carl, Marc & Tony,

Thanks very much for the informative replies - I'll go with the Andrea Blue etc. mix. Carl, the photos are great; illustrate perfectly what I thought about different cloth batches & shades etc. The colour of the helmet looks like Field Blue or Luftwaffe Uniform could be a close match.

I am always amused by these discussions of uniform colors. I was watching a great series on the History Channel called "World War Two in Color" and no two uniforms in the field were the exactly the same color. Plus, any uniform new is not the same as one after a few months of being in country.

So I guess the lesson is, aside from not painting a green uniform red, if you are in the range of the intended color you will be okay.

I think the first is closest but a little too green, the middle three too grey and the last one too light.

One of the problems with computers is that screen colors vary between users so we are each going to see something slightly different.

The same with colour charts Bob, I've ordered a colour from the chart and when it comes it's nothing like what I wanted.

Color charts are done by offset printing and matching to paint colors is an art.

They should do like with house paint and provide paint chips. That is the only true representation. Didn't Humbrol do that once?
