I've made a start on this superb little number from jon Smith. The buttons and braid need toning down, the coat is just under coat.
Carl.

Hi Carl,

I love these John Smith figures. They really capture some of the bleak melancholy of the First World War, and the figures are very naturally posed. Nothing heroic, just very human. You've made an excellent start on this figure (one of my favourites). I can't wait to see how you finish him.

Wow Carl,
What paint do you use, Vallejo, other?

I'd like to start painting figures again but haven't fixed on a paint yet, and have never tried acrylics of any kind.

Ray

Thanks Carl,
I wonder could Vallejo paints be compared to the old enamel Humbrols? The thing with Humbrol is that I'm convinced the formula has changed (might be my loss of skill) they don't seem to flow or even cover so well as the older ones, even mixing the pigment sludge from the bottom of the tin doesn't work so well as it once did. In fact I wouldn't really call the stuff in the bottom sludge anymore, now it's more like a gooey paste.

The Vallejo's always look so nice, dead flat and all that, applying them is the doubtful thing for me and I don't like buying samples bottles without knowing how to work them.

Oh well, thanks again,

Ray

Hi Balázs

I have nearly all of his 120mm figures and some of his 54mm figures. Die sind einfach klasse und super modelliert

Update, WW1 German NCO.

I have added to the trench to allow some detailing to the parapet, and extended it, to " Frame" the figure more. I will need to add more transitional tones between the highs & lows.
Thanks for stopping in,
Carl.

Carl - I originally posted that I thought the parados behind the NCO was too low, but now I'm not so sure. See the attached photo British trench of 1915. You can tell the depth and clearly the parados was lower than the parapet. On the other hand, see the deep German trench in the other photo. So....

I think I'd still be inclined to add a layer of sandbags on top, but whatever...

Grand painting!!!

All the best,
Dan

Hi Carl. I like the way you have painted the figure so far, but I don´t know if the whole picture looks a little bit blue or if you have paint the coat and the cap to blue.

I have attached a photo from the homepage from Jon Smith where you can see the figure painted from David Lane and he had "found" a really good colour. There were many different colours depending on the period of war and how long the things were worn, but in all cases not so "blue"

And you can see at "kaisersbunker" many examples

All the best

Ulrich
