WIP Legionaire Mexique 1863

Here is another of Metal Modeles series of Legionaire's busts.

The face is started.

Face is mainly complete i now start with the acrylic undercoats. Since I'm not that good with acrylics I use this stage to practice. One day I'll get better.

I now switched to oils and it's mainly complete. I've adjusted the color of the uniform from the undercoat. There is still the white strap to finish, I gave it a quick run last night but it's still to white so I'll tone it down a bit. I also noticed in posting the pictures that I forgot the hair on his temples. Good thing I caught this but you guys would have told me anyways.

Now I need to finish the base.

Hello Jean,

I like very much the way you handle the fleshtones.

In my modest opinion, I must say that you abused the the highlights on the jacket, next time, try smooth the transitions of colours less.
Like I said before, this is my modest opinion, but anyway congratulations!!! if you like, is the more important thing

I like what you have done. (did a familiar bust like this, infact it was my first figure).
But you don't shade the blue, only highlight.
Thats why it looks flat. You can shade blue with orange, and for the overall effect it is better to do so.
After you finished the blue color you can highlight the red epaulette's with yellow (mix from red an yellow gives a orange) But try to avoid to orange.
Then highlight the green also with a mix from yellow and the basecollor green.
I see you have shaded the red and the green but not highlighted.

But it's just some advice....not a must do...As long you are happy with this result thats important. Your next figure will be better.
But keep painting, you are on the right track.
Keep with your fleshtone's that are great.

Hi Jean,

I agree with Pedro and Marc's comments about the blue colour on the jacket. Try to reduce the contrast and aim for a smaller variation between the base colour and the highlight colour. Keep the base colour dark blue, and make the highlight colour 10% lighter than the base. This will help focus attention on the face, which is where you want it.

I assure you that in reality the highlights are not as bright, the lighting seem to make them stand out a bit more in the pictures.

Megroot, I find your comment interesting. I used Winsor Blue(Greenshade) and a bit of Blue-Black to shade. If I understand correctly you would mix in some Orange. Would this darken the Blue or change the tonality to add interest?

For the epaulettes I did add Chrome Yellow to both the Red and Green. The highlights are more visible in a top shot but I may go back and add small touches.
