Well I have finally finished him. This is Hawk Miniatures bust of Major James McCudden VC. Sculpted by Carl Reid. There are a couple of bits to tidy up but he is bascially there. It is painted in oils and acrylics and I have tried to give him a tired look to give character to what is quite a plain face.

Hi Ross,

Fantastic job mate, the face is superb and I love the tired looking eyes. I'm just wondering if the colour of the VC ribbon is correct. I thought it should be a bit more "brick red".

the leather is fantastic and the bloodshot eyes make me feel he has been at work for over 24hrs. Nice brush work!

This is seriously good! As for the colour of the V.C. ribbon, according to my one and only medal book ("Taffrail", 1956, I bought it new!) "was.... crimson for the Army. The latter colour, really a sort of claret [!] was adopted during the First World War for the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force."

The amazing skin tone!
I liked it very much.
I judged that you used acrylic.
Is that right?
I think almost all wonderful blending is a miracle to here by acrylic.
I congratulate completion.

Thank you for the comments. Hikaru the face is in oils and leather work is on oils and the rest is in acylics. Reference the ribbon it should be Brick Red but I went frot he faded look as this colour has a tendency to darken but looking at it I will put a few glazes of red over it to hep the ribbon stand out more from the MM board. Intererstingly the RN's VC was Blue pre-1918.

Great paintjob Ross!
I only find the red in the corners of the eyes beginning a bit too abruptly.
A bit more blending with the white would make it better.

cheers,
Marcel.

Great job on this bust Ross, nice effect with the face, he looks worn out and under stress, my wife creates this look in me sometimes !!:)

Cheers gents.I'll have a look at the eyes but in the flesh they are not to bad. I am playing with a new camera at the moment and the pics are resized how I would like them.
