hello
this is the splendid carl reid bust.i did some changes.on the right arm was an chevron casted in which does not match the rank insigina of the collar.it could have been ment as the ALTE KÄMPFER-old fighter chevron but i doubt that this was worn on battle uniforms?
then i added on the shoulderboards an romb for the rank, this because the bord frames are closed so the romb was missing. and i did give him an EK1 he looked very underdecorated for my taste.
well of course this sucks in regards to the one shown here by Sang Eon Lee.but this was an fine inspiration.even with my humble painting it looks not too bad.which is an sign of the impressive sculpt.
its about 50 percent done.the arms paintings has to refined and some other details worked over.one of the hardest things will be to paint the decal with the eagle on the helmet.the other is not so hard.i see me already cursing:mad: an redoing it ten times:eek::mad:but doing without ?NAW
in short its an joy to paint.if germans are your thing get it.this will not disappoint you
cheers
thinking on it i will not let the chinstrap dangling like the orginal has i will let the strap slip over the front rim.this is more frontline and it helps to soften the slightly wrong shape of the helmet an little bit.if i would have still an warrior steel helmet which are perfectly shaped i would have changed alas i havent one so i will do without.one could of course make an splintercover for it then the problem is fixed too but i want the sharp look without

Congrats on being an early bird on this bust!

I won't comment on the painting until it's fully done. Is there anything we can do about the informational aspects of the pictures?

Thanks!

Hi Mark,

I'm please you like the piece, and hope you enjoyed it!

I am No expert where German WW2 uniform and insignia is concerned. But the uniform was taken from a Photo of the day, he had the chevron on the right arm in the photo, there was some deliberation over this, and whether it should added or not. We decided to add it.
I will scan and post the picture when I get time which clearly shows the chevron on the right arm.
I am not sure what this means, I am in the hands of the experts in this field!

Carl

hello carl
it could have been the chevron for ALTE KÄMPFER this was issued to early members of the SA and was worn on the right one.
or the chevron was the GEFREITENWINKEL corporals chevron but that is worn left.sometimes the negatives have been turned and then then you get pics on which the insignia is turned to the wrong side like the eagle on chest.
in short this BUST IS SPLENDID AS THE REST YOU DID.the helmet is slightly to shallow on the front, but does not detract from the overall beauty.its simply an masterpiece.i can only guess how difficult it must be to make an helmet by scratch
i like your powerfull style an lot its excellent.i have seen from Michalminature your british general and i think here one sees the reverted negative from the painting of the gerenal he hold the sabre left as the medals are on the other side.so i think you did get an reverted pic of the german as well???and it was an gefreiter or corporal...
its surely not the last carl reid buts i buy.i love them.even if i do them no justice with painting.
whish you futhermore lots of inspiration
cheers

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your kind words!

I don't think we have a reversed negative, because the Eagle would be over the left breast pocket, and the ribbon and buttons would show on the opposite side. This image clearly shows all the relative details in the correct position. So why or what this chevron means....! I don't know...?

As for the Micheal miniatures piece all the details are reversed which clearly showed the negative had been reversed, because the medals and honours were on the right breast.

Please find attched the scanned image of the German. I hope this explains it a little!

Carl

hello carl
i looked at it some time.i think the thing is no chevron at all.it looks more like an flaw in the negative or the film.because its placed in the way that its more in front of the sleeve and so no chevron was attached.it could be an straw or such.or he did rip the uniform and is was stiched not to expertly by himself???
but i am very sure this is due to an negative flaw or an flaw in the film.
its clearly an NCO,and he is too young to wear an ALTE KÄMPFER CHEVRON.
thanks for the pics as your replies
cheers

Hello Markus,

I don't think it is a flaw in the negative because it follows the contours of the creases in the fabric of the sleeve. It could be a tear in the sleeve that was repaired...? But it does not appear to be! It looks too uniform to be a repair, so my only thoughts is it is some type of insignia, But I don't know what...

But thanks for your help in trying to identify this mysterious marking!

It can always be remove with a scalpel very easily if anyone is unsure.

Carl

dear carl
well i have no idea what it could be.if someone does know it would be great to hear what it is.
i never have seen something on an german tunic.but as you say its easy carved away mr Lee did it too.he painted his as Unterfeldwebel i wanted an feldwebel therefore i added the star to the shoulderboards.can only again and again stare at his pics of his version and mourn in dispair when i look at mine:eek:
cheers

I have to agree Markus. Lee is truly a remarkable painter. He is also geniunely nice man!
But he renders me speechless every time he sends me an image!!!

Carl

Nice work so far Markus on this bust, i like the colour tones you have put into his face, look forward to seeing it complete.

Steve(y)

hello steve
well thanks i have now made the helmets strap with thick cardboard.then i painted the shield decals.and the shoulderboards as collar details.iam not too happy with the eagle decal but can live with it.maybe i do it again but after 7 atempts this is the best i could do.one should be able to paint
i would be very interested if Mr.Lees where painted or if he used decals.i am not sure if Archer has any in 200mm
cheers
