WIP Critique Rampaging Viking

Hi all,

This is what I have been working on for the last week or so....it is Andreas Miniatures, Viking Fury. I first painted the Viking Fury 6 months ago and have always thought I could do a little more with it (not that it isn't already a great figure - cos it is!!).

As you can see, I have adjusted the helmet so it sits more on the forehead and have added cheek guards. I have scratch built a shield using plasticard and spray mount for texture. I have also scratch built the right arm and hand as well as the spear. This is the first hand I have ever sculpted and am quite pleased with my efforts (even if I do say so myself). However, the serious sculptors on this forum may have something to say about it.....so please be gentle.

Sam this looks great, only comment is the spear looks a bit 'toyish'.
I know its a bit of a cliche but why not go for a good old lump of an axe.

Hi Del , thanks for your comment , i know what you mean n i was goona try it with a axe or sword but the original bust is posed so an axe would need to be leaning forward n when i tried this it looked unbalanced , as for the sword ! That was just a bitch to make , so a spear it was .

I would also suggest that the shield looks far too thick. It'd most commonly be between a quarter of an inch (6mm) and half an inch (12mm) thick in reality.

Hi Sam,

Good and daring idea to do something different with this bust.
The hand looks very well sculpted, but I must say the spear is not yet cool enough. Maybe you could reposition it more parallel with the arm so that it can be longer and more man-like? My other comment would be that the face guard hides the most prominent feature of this bust: the eyes.

Anyway, just some suggestions; feel free to ignore... ;-)

I think the issue with using a spear and not making it full length is that it will end up looking a bit like a Zula Assegai stabbing spear regardless of how accurate the rest of it is.
Good work on the arm and hand.

Fair play to you for having a good go. I have to agree about the spear, it looks like a drumstick or a conductor's baton. I think it needs to be much bigger.

When you say the spear needs to be bigger do you mean in length or thickness?

The shafts of spears I've seen reenactors carrying, have been about an inch and a half diameter. Here's some examples Sam. http://www.darkknightarmoury.com/c-19-spears.aspx

Nice one mate . Im now thinking of trying a sword in its place as im not sure how i would make it thicker as the hand is sculpted to it .
If i used a sword i could cut the shaft and still use the hand , but we'll see

If you go back with the spear, I think the shaft needs to be full length to look right. I think you could thicken it up a bit in the hand and be OK. Since the palm of the hand will conform a bit to the shaft, its not absolutely necessary that the part in the hand be 100 percent the thickness of the rest of the shaft. It will just appear to be sunk into the palm a little.
