Wonderful job. You managed to capture the character nicely, and breath some subtle color into the otherwise drab uniform.

Read the reprinted newspaper article. It says that portraits of girlfriends/ sweethearts were popular as well as regimental badges. ~Gary

All done.
Not happy with casting of this one. Too many air blows, especially the face and eyes.Looked like a bad case of smallpox!
A deep casting 'gap' alongside the torso of the shirt under the arms.
Sculptor also used a heavy knife to delineate the seams across shoulders and arms of the shirt.........way too deep and coarse. Similar problem was the representation of the leather insert to the seat of the breeches:
a) wrong shape extending over the complete seat of the rear and too high at the front. All I can find are much smaller inserts finishing inside the mid thigh region.
b) again a heavy knife cut used to delineate the outline of the insert.....far too coarse.
The above was filled in and sanded down to allow the detail to be painted on freehand.
Overall though a good subject and a great addition to my expanding WW1 collection.
The next figure I have of Tommy's War, the shooting rifleman from the Linconshire Reg., is a far better sculpt and casting. Hopefully, it will not take three full days of prep before I can paint it!!

OK David, going to ask again, colour mixes for light blue & flesh please
Using oils mix again, cooked at what temperature.

From memory;
Flesh: Brown madder Alizarin, titanium white with hints of sap green+blue black
Highlights are more white and mars yellow[ or similar] to the base. I work the shadows onto the above that's already dried at 50oC in the oven. The shadows can be any combination of blue black and raw umber with sometimes a bit of sap green or purple alizarin if a warmer effect is needed. I warm up the cheeks, nose and ears with Indian red in poppy oil, ie. a glaze.
The blue was again, blue black with some raw umber and titanium white. You'll need to play around with these to get the strength of colour you want. Shading is by adding more blue black and raw umber to the base on the pad and taking to the model. Highlights would be more white with a touch of Mars yellow to stop it looking too 'chalky'.

Thanks David like to get a flavour of the colour choices you've made & will try some of these mixes on upcoming projects as part of my ongoing learning & experimentation in our mini artform.

Your choice for the tat was dead on. I work in a Veteran's Hospital/ Residence here in Toronto (Sunnybrook) and regimental tattoos are most common by far, followed by battle honours, traditional style (skulls, eagles, pin-up girls) then sweethearts/Mom.
Navy Vets tend to wear ship names or old school sailing ships and RCAF Vets wear nose art of their old crate.
I'm fairly well tattooed myself so it becomes a topic of conversation when I talk with with the old boys around the campus.
