WIP Critique Ooops, need some advise, please

Well Guys,

Ever get that voice in your head that says "STOP", and ya don't listen? I sure heard it and I didn't stop and cut up the BAR on this older 200mm release from Warriors. Now I've got to figure out whether to cut off the BAR mag pouches or sling a Thompson ammo bag across his shoulder. What would you guys do in this situation?

It won't be too hard to cut off the pouches and make some Thompson ammo pouches, but I'm concerned about the web belt and making that look real, plus adding a few more bits of gear. I certainly am NOT a major sculptor, but I can get by on some of it.

This is going to be part of a dio, "Racing for Pink Slips", which includes the Harley, BMW R750 and it's rider.

Anyway, if yall got suggestions I'm all ears because there isn't any BARs available on the market in 200mm and making one is out of the question.

You need to check out Reedee's minatures. He has made an outstanding 1/9th scale (200mm) BAR. I highly recommend his work.

I like the Thompson, and it fits better with a guy on a Harley then the BAR. which seems like a pretty big gun for a guy on a bike.

Thx for all the input, very healpful, especially the BAR find. I hate google, never the same results for everyone. Too dang narrow, probably why I'm starting to use StartPage.com.

Chris, if I do go back to the BAR I'll get with ya ASAP, thx for the offer. What do yall think, honestly? Jeff is talking about what I was thinking initially, until I realized the BAR pouches and thought I got in over my head. Would a set of BAR mags on a guy be out of the realm of realism while holding a Thompson? Or would it leave too many people guessing as to what the heck is going on?

I'm scraping off the pack straps to leave a clean jacket and filling with milliput right now. I even fashioned a pineapple grenade, but am waiting on building the Thompson pouches and standing by for input on this.

Please let me know if I'm stretching it or would it fly.

I like the Thompson. The BAR would seem like a large gun for a guy on a bike and it would have needed a side car to make it more plausible ( like the end scene in saving private ryan)

It is ,however a snapshot of a moment in time, so who knows what the reasons would be for different ammo pouches, I'm pretty sure a lot of Bar gunners ended up with a Thompson for one reason or another but IMO I think it's better as is. You just need to Make a judgement on the ammo pouches mate.

Right on Dave, that's what I'm thinking, adding an ammo pouch or bag slung with a mag slightly exposed with rounds visible. Should work just fine. Thx for the advise, needed the reassurance.

Hi Carl and thx for the compliment. The Hog is Italeri's kit #7401. Somehow I ended up with two in my bunker and thougth one would make good with Dragon's BMW R750. I'll keep you posted.

Ok Guys, I'll be keeping you posted from here on out. If yall see anything that needs attention, hollar please.

Today I smoothed out the milliput on the back of the jacket and where the shoulder straps were located and have made a tricky bag from Magic Sculpt with a Thompson magazine hanging out. It was way more than I was ready to bargain for by cutting away the BAR pouches and trying to redo the web belt and actual Thompson pouches. So, I think it looks acceptable and since there really wasn't a standard size bag I can adlib and make er work.

Once the Magic Sculpt dries I can go back and clean up the edges and finish the snap buttons and strap. Hope yall like it so far.

Nice work Stevie. I think you did a great job on the bag and the ammo sticking out the bag is a lovely touch. I am looking forward to seeing this evolve given the very high quality of all your work, but it's a big thumbs up thumb: ) from me so far fella.

Thx Dave, I'll be working the strap in the morning. I'll need to do some research on the bubkles, etc. to make sure I get them right. then once this guys is dialed in I'll finish the Harley and get started on the Beemer.

Its Funny your diorama reminds me of a story I heard about a GI trying to get a BMW home from the war. He was starting to take it apart and send it home a piece at a time. One day a pilot asked him what he was doing, and when the guy told him, the pilot laughed and said "You dumbass, all you had to do was ask. Go get the bike and load it on the plane." And that is how he got his BMW home.

Now that is funny. I understand lots of stuff made it back to the states.

Straps and buckles

Ok Guys, sorry for the delay.

Taking longer than expected and sacrificing numerous tiny parts to the carpet monster I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, it came out better than I could hope for. One thing about Super Large Scale Figures, you can fabricate your own PE parts with relative ease.

I used several different gauges of copper wire and smashed them in a vise type action using a cable splicer. It worked rather well after filing off the excess and bending it into shape. The strap material is lead sheet and some pewter sheet acquired from Michael's Craft store. That sheet pewter has worked very well on more than one occasion.

I used pics from the web to duplicate the retention clips and followed the basic design for the rings, etc. I also had to modify the collar and even clear under the lapel area for a more realistic look. Now some of yall may think that’s a bit retentive, but I really didn’t fancy trying to line up the straps for a continuous look. It was not difficult to carve out and it was worth the extra effort. I still need to etch in the lapel lines and a few more touch ups before I get back to the Harley punch list.

For those of you who have seen my builds you know I jump around a bit, but I hit what ever needs the most attention before I move on. So, I do apologize if it looks like I’m all over the map, HA!

Yup fantastic stuff Steve. You know I'm a killer for the detail so I can really appreciate the time and effort put in to this quality workmanship. This is one of the reasons I like 120mm, due to the fact I can fabricate stuff myself rather than get the pe stuff without the threat of it looking...well.....wrong!

I've no doubt this is going in the direction of all your other work so I'm watching with interest and loving the updates fella

Why thank you brother Dave, glad ya like er so far. I'll try to keep the updates closer together. My wife says, "Don't be a try baby, just do it" Lol. She's a keeper! After I apply another coat of primer I'll see whatever I missed to back fill and finish the putty fill, etc. Still another bike to go too.
