Hi Guys,

Please see attached the first pics of my latest project (yes, another bloody Roman) this time "The Spaniard", played by Russell Crowe in Gladiator.

Still early days in the painting process. I've painted in most of the base colours and just starting the shading and highlighting on the arms and legs. The face is more or less done, although I will probably continue to tweak it and add a few washes to match the final flesh colour on the arms. IMG_0297.JPGIMG_0298.JPGIMG_0303.JPGIMG_0304.JPG

As always, I welcome any comments or feedback.

Looking good Tony, there are so many versions of Rusty in this role but I think this sculpt is one of the better ones. Looking forward to the progress.

Andrew

Thanks Ray, sorry my photos were so blurry. I really am a much better modeller than I am a photographer.

Cheers Andrew, yes this is probably the best figure to come from the Gladiator movie that I've seen so far. I've already painted the Latorre figure of Maximus dressed in his army uniform, but this one by Alexandros appears much more realistic. It appears to be based on the promotional image attached, rather than a scene from the movie itself. I stand to be corrected, but the shoulder armour and shield don't appear in the movie as shown on the box art, and the shield is also not related to any scene in the movie itself. These may be continuity errors or a deliberate decision by the sculptor; either way its a curious omission.

Hi Carl, thanks mate. Still a long way to go, but it's starting to come together. Apologies once again from my crappy photography

G'day Nick, yes, blood is definitely on the menu. After doing a long run of Romans my next figure is definitely a Digger.

Hope you like the progress pics attached.

Thanks Alex,

Blowing up the images to approximately 10 times the actual size of the figure really does expose you to scrutiny.

Still not happy with the eyes and face. More work required.

Looking really nice Tony,I like to see large images as you can see a little more how one works etc ...

Carlos

Thanks Andrew, Marc and Carlos,
I've made some more progress lately but mostly just blending and working on smoothing out the transitions between highlights and shadows.

I'll post some update pics in a couple of days.

OK, so when I said I'd post some update pics in a couple of days, I actually meant a couple of months.

Actually, this figure has been sitting quietly in a box waiting for me to notice him for several months, and last night I rediscovered him.

As usual my photos are shite (taken with the iPhone camera), but I thought I'd post some pics as promised, even if I am about 3 months late!!

Nice one, Tony. He's looking great! What have you got left to do with him? Are you going to bloody him up a little and what are you planning for the base?

Hi Nick, thanks again for your comments. Yes, blood and sand. The base will be simple sand with a few drops of blood added. The tunic and armour will also get some blood splatter treatment, but I will hold back a bit. I don't want to go overboard as I've learnt that less is more when it comes to scale blood.

I'll try to take some better pics tonight and re-post tomorrow.

OK, so this one might have dropped off the radar but actually I've been working away at it for months. The problem was that I just wasn't feeling the love from this guy. He looked OK, but frankly OK just isn't good enough for me. I wanted him to look awesome. And then Sergey came along with his totally awesome version:eek::notworthy: and I realised I needed to start again...so I did.

Stripped back to raw metal and repainted, I also chose to go with the helmet on option, which required me to remove half of the head, cut off the nose and drill out the helmet.;) The painting is more or less done now. I put a series of oil washes over the armour last night and will do some final highlights before I attempt to add the blood splatter effects that I've been wanting to do since the day I bought this figure 6 months ago.(y)
