After a long gap from painting thought I would dip the brush again , I have made a blanket out of magic sculpt and given him a slightly pronounced beard , also thought I would give some splints to his injured leg ,to add to his misery .

You are doing a Napoleonic and you haven't seen it? Rush right out

it is hands down the best Napoleonic film. The trailer doesn't show any scenes from the Russian retreat but it is really well done, as one would expect from Ridley Scott's first film.

The duellists....one of the finest films ever made IMHO......Watch it as soon as possible...now where is my copy.....also nice start on this classic figure....

Good on him and long may he continue mate......your right about the Zulu films too my ol Dad (an ex Grenadier ) took me and my brother to see it when I was a nipper and got me hooked into all this malarkey......all the best and definately get hold of the Duellists if you can you will not be disappointed.....

I have been thinking about the blanket type sculpt that I made for the figure , I was trying to get into cold desperation mood, ,I was thinking of making it not a blanket but part of a canvas tent cut up by perhaps another retreating soldier. And taken by this one off his fallen comrade .
I thought of perhaps drilling a small hole having some wire to represent a guy rope with a peg tied to the end the wire would give me the opportunity to give more suggestion of howling wind .
Some people might say why would you not cut it off , my theory is desperate times desperate measures , and why would you use the energy to remove something with frozen fingers ...just leave it
Your thoughts would be appreciated ,
Cheers Chris

Chris I would stay blanket. It is far more likely that a retreating Frenchman would pick up either a full or partial blanket for use against the cold than a piece of canvas IMO. From what I have read, when the weather turned and the army really started to suffer, there were not that many tents to be got.

Have done a bit more , just getting colour on in some areas ,the blanket is coming along but nor 100% sure about how it's looking regard color although the weathering will change its appearance .
Put base color on legs / strapping need to shade with some washes to give depth have done some high lighting on the coat and shadows , started putting some weathering on the cuffs .
Sword and bayonet scabbard have base coolers need to tone and give depth to handle and take away it brightness still a lot to do but getting there .......I hope
Any feed back would be great
Cheers Chris

Hi Chris,

In regards to the blanket I would certainly go for a lighter colour, as I think the dark brown colour looks too "heavy".
Hard to explain what I'm trying to say, but it looks like he has a bear skin over his shoulders.
It would be more convincing if he had a thread bare Army blanket over his shoulders that was thin and ragged and full of holes.
That would make his plight even more miserable and forlorn.
A pale grey colour with a fade red or blue stripe would probably be appropriate.
I'm sure if you ask, someone could send you a pic of a French army blanket of the 1812 era that you could use as a guide for painting.

Hi Tony
Yea you are bang on with what you say , been looking at it since I painted it ,just was not working for me , kept thinking put a raccoon skin hat on him and he could be trapper lol.
Will get some more wear into the blanket , and the faded stripe will be much better, and as you say will add to his miserable plight .
Thanks mate for the info and suggestion
Cheers Chris
