WIP Critique Ostep Bulba, 75mm

Hey all

My second cossack from Irbis.

I am painting this one to represent one of Taras Bulba's two sons. This is Ostep, the son who after returning home from college in Kiev, went to Zaporozhia with Taras and jumped both feet into the Cossack lifestyle... Let's call him "The Good Son". The other one, Andrei, went very bad... betraying him family and the seche by joining the enemy for the Polish Princess... Bad, very bad.

In the very early stages with this one. Flesh tones are more or less done and the pantaloons are base coated with a dark red. (Vallejo Red 926)

This is obviously a mounted piece, the horse is very well sculpted... can;t wait to dig into that part of the project, even though it will be a bear.

Flesh is looking good Colin. Nice vibrant red that I always have trouble getting out of a Vallejo bottle.

Since I resemble MR. Bulba , I must say the shine on the bald head is spot on. Great job!

Ralph, Colin, Steve, Pedro and Roger...Thanx for the kind words. I have been llooking forward to digging into these cossacks since I first saw them. I hope I do them all justice.
Colin, the red (Vj 926) came straight out of the bottle... very much thinned and three coats, I think. I think it's a really nice, rich tone of red. Not sure what to use to highlight it... maybe add Scarlet first and then Sunny Skintone to that. It'll take some trial and error.

A little slow moving on this guy. I highlighted with Carmine, then Carmine + Sunny skintone. Shaded with the base red + Red Black, then Red Black in the deeper recesses.

You are really on top of the flesh tones Colin.
The red shadows look great here too.....the 'Taras' reds must have been wash out by the photography, as you have used the same mixes.
I'm saddened to hear that he is a mounted figure. I thought that he would be in a recumbent pose doing one of the fantastic Cossack Hopak dances

The base of this red is a bit darker but the big thing is that Taras' coat is more flowing while Ostep's pantaloons are very bunched giving more opportunity to really dig into the shading. There is some washout in the other pics.

I love the idea of a cossack dancing... Hmmmm, I do believe you've planted the seed for a new sculpting project once I'm done with these guys. I have an extra head from this fig to use as a starting point.

I can already see it... A couple of drunken Cossacks egging on a third drunk Cossack while he kicks up some dust. Maybe one might be playing a balalanka and the other beating a tambour or clapping and stomping his foot.

Thanx G. Wasn't sure on the spelling... This one came came out of the English translation of the book. I used to go to school with another Uke who spelled it "Ostop"... So I flipped a coin

Some days I misspell my own name... But thats another story :hungover:

Update...

Went with a very dark blue for the kaftan. The turned back lining is a much lighter red than the pantaloons (more than the pics show). The piping and tassels on the chest are just first coated... it will take a couple of coats for full coverage... and alot of touch ups between the red and yellow.
