5th Dragoon Balaclava, 21st lancer Omdurman, and 38th foot Inkerman, colours for lancer are right or wrong depending how you interpret whichever photo is chosen.

Will learn how to do the photos one day, the colours are looking better, now to crack how to do faces.

Nice painting Chris. What did you use for the metal effect on the brass helmet on the 5th Dragoon?

Chris

Paint used was vallejo gold, if I remember right, just straight gold, when it had dried another coat of thinned gold finished with a coat of varnish. Thought about this again, if I remember right the gold went over a yellow undercoat.
Yes the photos do look elongated, I will redo them and put up again, using my usual camera .

Chris.

Well done Chris, keep at it!!
If you want to go for a more realistic looking lance, it's not difficult to make one. They were made of bamboo. The M1894 was 2743mm in length. The M1868 was longer at approximately 2769mm. I don't know what scale the lancer figure is, but you can figure out the lance scale length easily enough. I used a basswood dowel from an art store. Cut it to proper length and then use a pencil to scribe the growth rings around the bamboo. These are irregular in separation distance and some stick out more than others. Use light sand paper wrapped around a pencil or your finger and roll and sand away small concave amounts between the growth rings. I used resin from a Napoleonic kit for the spear tip and other end and cut and sanded it to the desired shape. Most of the attached photos, drawings and illustrations are M1868, but it was very similar to M1894 from what I can tell.
All the best,
Dan

Chris - these are looking great (glad to see you uploaded better photos too). Very clean painting. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your next couple of subjects!

...mate I'm still struggling, too!
You could almost says it's another hobby in itself.

Nice painting though, that's the important bit.

Thanks for that, will keep that in mind if I have to do another lance. For this one I used brass rod I had in my tool box,
I made it scale 9' long and stuck the kit ends onto the rod, doesn't look to bad. The figure is 120mm by MMM.

Thanks all for comments and tips, greatly appreciated, nearly done my next one, 'Saxon Thane', will post pictures when finished.
