Bit the bullet at the weekend and dug out my boxes of old figures that had been packed away for about 20 years or more, had to wear a dust mask and clean them up with a soft Make-up brush, glad to say that most of them were okay and a only few had broken bits, bent swords or chipped paint, so I will have to dedicate some bench time for repairs.
These might bring back some memories of the old stuff.

Nice Terry - seem to remember the sleeping cowboy (Barton miniatures) and love the viking.

I might make the effort of digging out the old figures to take some pics when I get the chance, although Nosatlgia ain't what it used to be :D

Hi Paul the sleeping cowboy is Barton, I think that the sheriff and cavalry soldier are Series 77 and of course the Viking and Archer are both Verlinden, my next quest is to go back into the store and dig out the Grey Army, I think I have other Bartons, Post Militaire, Series 77, Pheonix, Verlindens etc, so go for it set a day aside and dust the oldies off and get them photographed.

The Viking is the first 120mm figure I ever painted so this brings back some good memories. The Barton sleeping cowboy is another one that I once had. 90mm of solid metal!
 
I get a buzz out of seeing an old figure popping up PF especially someones version of one that I have painted or have in the ranks of the grey army, here are a couple more oldies, does anyone know who produced these?
I have always said that as a historical figure painter that I find it hard to ignore the excellent sculpting and painting of Fantasy figures that are presented on PF and other forums, I forgot that I had done these lol.

Anyone who has looked at my site, knows I'm still trying to finish a bunch of old figures <lol>
My output is pretty minimal.

But what I think is interesting is how much the standards have changed from the early days - both with painting and sculpting. I think we've got used generally to much higher standards.

Obviously a bit of Conan theme going on there Terry :)
Some of the fantasy stuff that was appearing around that time was really nice. I seem to remember the first heads appeared in the 80's too (set of three mounted together on a wooden block) which were the earliest busts I can recall.

Series 77 were difficult to get hold of locally, but I have got a lovely figure somewhere of a Hopolite handing his son a model ship whilst he's sitting on his shoulder. Compared to Hinchcliffe the casting was much better (although I've always had a soft spot for Bennassi figures which pop up occasionally)

Anyway I need to be working so must dash and earn a crust :whistle:

I used to buy my kits of Tangley Model Workshop, think they were in Sussex, they stocked the full range of Series 77 and I used to order several at a time so I ended up with a fair amount of them, I remember the Hopolite, cant wait to get into the grey army box now to see whats in there.

Julian Benassi was a great character. Anyone who received his hand-written letters with their wonderful turn of phrase remembers him fondly.
 
These two were damaged so I started repairs last night, just a bit of filler and some paint touch ups here and there and in the cabinet they will go, I think that the Saxon is Post Militaire, not sure who produced the Man at Arms, there is a signature on the base N.ERRINGTON.

I've got that Saxon too Terry (not as nicely painted though) The men at arms may be a Hinchcliffe one - I remember the figure and something about it rings a bell, although I wouldn't stake the house on it :ROFLMAO:
 
I have another Errington a guy with lots of armour and a real smirk on his face that I had started but it has got damaged and is a long way off from being finished, if I remember correctly the appeal of these figures was the more natural stylish appearance and the little bit of character instead of the standing up straight poses that we were used too at that time.

Thanks Phil the response has has been really good with so many remembering the figures and knowing the companies that released them, its just a wee trip down memory lane but it also lets the new generations of figure painters see what was out there many many years ago, in those days it was either Humbrol enamels or Oils and now we have a vast range of Acrylics that produce some of the finest work that you are ever likely to see and I am sure that you will agree, there are still lots of Planeteers posting outstanding results using oils.
