    WIP Critique Iroquois

Some more progress - suicide zoom pics ;) I'm slowly working my way down the model, doing some more work on the coat facings, metals and the bead-work around his neck earlier today. Tonight, I might have a proper go at doing the reds. I'm starting to enjoy using the JS paints now that...

    WIP Critique Iroquois

The results of about an hour and a half pottering about in my shed tonight: I did a bit of work on his hair, added a bit more contrast to his belly and laid on some yellow ochre base coat to the coat facings. I painted the tree a few days ago but it needs a bit more work to tone down...

    WIP Critique Iroquois

Cheers Paul, nice to see you looking in (y) I still need (lots) more practice at thinning the paint to the right consistency, it's all a bit hit and miss at the minute. The JS paint goes a bit weird when overthinned, especially with water, so I'm experimenting with their Flow Medium and Magic...

    WIP Critique Iroquois

Thanks Aris, I'm not too sure about "nailing" it but I'll be happy to get it finished to a standard that's acceptable to a casual eye ;)

Cheers Bob (y) Hopefully you won't have to wait too long, the competition is 4 weeks today.

Thanks Kev, borrow away by all means. I "borrowed" them myself from the fantastic colour mixing book by William Powell (Native American bronze tones;)) and just modified it till it looked about right to my tired old eyes.

    WIP Critique Iroquois

With my local IPMS club Christmas competition fast approaching I thought I should make a start on my entry. 120mm Iroquois from Mitches Military Models. It's a lovely model, I hope I can do it justice. I'm painting this one with Jo Sonja acrylics to get some more practice using acrylics and...

Questions on How to paint white clothing

Like the others mentioned Chris, start with an off white base coat. Mixing Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber gives a nice chromatic black which you can adjust to a warm or cool bias by adjusting the relative quantities, more Blue for a cooler bias and more Umber for a warmer bias. Add a spot of...

Thanks Terry (y) I'd love to see what you do with those little mini-busts, I hope you'll post pics. I have another 3 or 4 in the series to do and, like you, would love to see more.

WIP Critique French Infantryman (AWI) and Fallschirmjaeger

My shed has been getting an upgrade recently so I've been away from my bench for a while but it's all done now and I'm chuffed to be back painting in familiar surroundings. I've been working on these two 1/16 busts from Stormtroopers. The French Infantryman is painted in oils and is pretty much...

Questions on German field Gray color

A good starting point in JS paints would be maybe a muted grey blue like Storm Blue or French Blue mixed with a muted yellow like Yellow Oxide or Raw Sienna. I'm an oils man but I'm trying switch to acrylics myself at the minute. I'm slowly learning the quirks of Jo Sonja paints, I'm liking them...

    WIP Sergeant, Spanish Cazadores, 1813

Very nice Steve. I had a go at sculpting a Tiradore a few months ago and mine looks pitifully toy-like when compared to your conversion. I can't wait to see it with some colour splashed on it (y)

Bust support: how to and should it be included in the kits

I use a brass rod. I also have a look on crafting/jewellery sites occasionally as they usually have interesting beads and trinkets that you can thread over the rod to add a bit more visual interest. I don't have any pics on my iPad to show what I mean but here's an example of a piece where I've...

    Can't paint for laughing

I just stumbled on this thread and it's definitely put a smile on my face :) From the mouths of babes indeed, it reminds me of something I overheard in the workshop bar in Germany about 20+ years ago and it still makes me smile now. A young married couple were setting up to have a game of pool...
