    WIP Yamnaya Chieftain

The anatomy is essentially done except for some adjustments here and there. The eastern Yamnaya had robust skull features that I tried to reproduce in my interpretation. One thing I wanted to avoid was a muscle man look. Seems much more likely they would have been lean, sinewy and rugged. So it...

    WIP Yamnaya Chieftain

Nap, Thanks for the interest. I have been jaded lately by the usual subjects and decided to try something different. This project fulfills two interests, sculpting and archaeology. The Yamnaya were major contributors to the creation of Europe. They were sheep herders who spilled out of the...

    WIP Yamnaya Chieftain

Here is my latest sculpt project, my interpretation of a Yamnaya Chieftain from around 3000BC. This is my attempt at a forensic recreation based on an admittedly limited knowledge of the science. When done he will be wearing items based on found grave goods. This is a 1/6th scale sculpt...

    Hun in Roman Service

One detail that I wanted to mention that might be of use for sculptors. The leather cloak was made by rolling out a flat lump of putty to the right thickness. I then added the seams where the pieces of leather were stitched together. It was then let to setup for a bit and then waded up into a...

    Hun in Roman Service

Hey Mike, Kind of digging doing larger scale stuff, it gives a more realistic sculpt. No bronze. Plan is to paint it myself. We'll see how that goes.

    Hun in Roman Service

Here is my 1/5 scale Hun. He's wearing a leather cloak typical of the indigenous peoples of Europe over an embroidered Roman tunic from the 400s. The subject of elongated skulls being common among the Huns is up for debate. But it makes for a striking bust.

    Huguenot Captain

The chain. Just enough to go from the cassock to under the sash. More than enough for me to decide I don't want to do that again for a while.

    Huguenot Captain

Folks, Here is my Huguenot Captain from the French Wars of Religion almost ready to base coat. Not seen in the pic is a chain that I made from putty that will hang across his doublet.

    Completed Handgonner 1480s

I did have one learning experience making the helmet. I wondered why the paintings almost always show the roundels as domed with a concentric outer ring. Then I realized that the dome allows the roundels to fit up against the curve of the helmet closer. And the outer ring provides clearance for...

    Primer choices

Thanks, guys. I'll use the Tamiya stuff since that's what Ive got. And try harder to not let it build up too much.

    Primer choices

I'm about to leap into painting again and want to get your thoughts on priming. My two choices are either spray can or out of a bottle. Spray can (Tamiya) seems to be durable and sticks to the surface well, but I'm concerned about it maybe having too much surface texture. The bottle primer is...

    Completed Handgonner 1480s

Hey Nap, I believe the ones you found show a helmet with visor, The roundels on the sides are probably protection for where the visor pivots. I haven't found a Google image yet, but there are depictions of helmets that have roundels on the side of the helmets without visors.

    Completed Handgonner 1480s

Here is my completed sculpt of a handgonner from the late 1400s. This particular type of handgonne was outdated by this time period but does appear in artwork from the 1480s, as do helmets with this particular type of side defense. I never found an existing example of this helmet, so it is my...

    WIP Germanic Warrior

Hey Folks, Been trying to get serious about my sculpting again after a lengthy absence due to family health issues. I'm hoping that posting here will keep me motivated. This is a bust of a Germanic tribesman from somewhere between 1AD and the 7th or 8th centuries. I'll determine a more...

    WIP Celt

Thank you, Ulrich It was always my main intent to create the most authentic Hallstatt Celt possible. Looking at it today there are a few things I'd change, but overall I am still happy with the final product.

    WIP Celt

Wow! I hardly ever come to this site anymore, what a great surprise to see one of my pieces. This one was a very limited production, I think I only sold about a dozen. It was a great project that I could not have done without the research provided by the Trauner brothers (I hope I got their last...
