Does anyone else sculpt this way?

thanks for all the comments guys, I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one doing things this way. My grandfather always used to say "If you look around and you don't see anyone, you're either leading the pack, or on thin ice"...I'd prefer to be neither, but rather in the company of you talented...

Does anyone else sculpt this way?

This may be an odd question, but since I'm reasonably new in these parts I thought I'd ask. I find it very enjoyable to sculpt heads from a solid block of Super Sculpey Firm as opposed to building an armature and working from a ball shape. I was wondering if anyone else has had any success with...

    Correct way to say Vallejo

As a Canadian living in California I pronounce it val-EH!-oh....but we stick EH! everywhere...as in, "would you like a beer, EH?!" I also live just down the road from Vallejo California, and they pronounce it val-eh-oh too, so I feel right at home here.

    1/9 German Bust completed.

German Officer Bust painted I am by no means a great figure painter, especially compared to the work exhibited here on a regular basis, but here's the painted bust. I went with an Artillery Officer uniform since I liked the idea of painting the red piping. I did my best to get things as...

    1/9 German Bust completed.

Hi Sergey, Thanks for the insights..I just took a few measurements to double check the figure proportions, and his shoulders are 2.3 inches wide, and the head is 1.1 inches high (minus hat) so I'm pretty close to being accurate..got a little lucky there since I didn't put enough effort into...

    1/9 German Bust completed.

I reworked and lengthened the shoulders and the epaulets, and left out any hint of an arm at all. I think this balances the sculpt out a bit better? You can see the fresh clay in the areas I added. Thanks for the earlier suggestions, and any other thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated...

    1/9 German Bust completed.

Thanks for the imput gentlemen, and the points are well taken. I think I focused a bit too much on the face and hat and let the body get a little too narrow. I didn't really have any plans to show arms or shoulders to any great effect and I think I probably tried to cram the shoulderboards into...

    1/9 German Bust completed.

I haven't posted anything here in a while but I wanted to submit this one for a few thoughts and comments. I am mostly pleased with the way he turned out although I think I may have the ears a bit too low? Not outside the realm of human proportions I don't think, but maybe just a bit too low for...

    WWII pilot

Thanks for the compliments Tony, they are much appreciated. Your point about the gloss on the goggles is well taken and will definitely be a finishing touch, I'll get on that!

    WWII pilot

Hi All... While I've been working mostly in sports figures, I thought I'd try my hand at something different and here's the result. I am certainly no expert in WWII flight gear, but I think most everything is in the right place. The scale is 1/5, and the sculpt was done in Super Sculpey Firm...

    hockey season is coming....

Hi all, thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated. The cage on this figure seems to really be a focal point, and while I wish I could say I have some magic technique, it was largely just a matter of fiddling around with soft brass wire until I got the shapes right. Thanks again for...

    hockey season is coming....

hi Rob, thanks for the comment and nice to "see" you again...I have picked up a bunch of the McFarlane pieces but the spare time to work with them has been hard to come by lately. The decal tips you gave me sure came in handy for this piece, so I owe you a big thanks for the help on that!

    hockey season is coming....

hi all....it's been a while since I have posted anything, but since hockey season is approaching I thought I'd post a pic of a scuulpt I did as a gift for my nephews birthday. I've been working on it as a spare time project, and while it's not perfect, I'm happy with the finished...

Problem about baking super sculpey with oven..

I completely second the sentiments of the last posts on this issue. I've always been hesitant about joining modelling forums because it seems often they become places to go and argue rather than offer support and a positive experience. The fact that such an excellent discussion was had on...

Problem about baking super sculpey with oven..

one more cent follow up info to my earlier post A DUKE study revealed that you would need to overheat and destroy the clay product in the oven-heating process to release hydrogen gas, and <0.1% of the phthalate esters would be released with no breakdown of the polyvinyl chloride...

Problem about baking super sculpey with oven..

my two cents I've been working with Sculpey pretty extensively (2-3 hours a day on average) for about 6 months now and haven't had any negative effects yet, although I have no doubt there are people out there who can have an allergic reaction. The general consensus among my research, which...

    Hockey anyone?

Those are very cool Rob! The MacFarlane figures are really popular with a lot of my friends and having the custom versions is a great idea. Do you mind if I ask how you do the lettering on the uniforms? Do you print your own decals or do you have a magic technique because they look great! I have...

    Hockey anyone?

Thanks for the comments everyone, and for the warm welcome!! I've been a little shy about posting on the forum but it seems that was all for naught! To reply to the questions, Brad, I went with a pretty simple pose but I am thinking of incorporating another figure and making a small vignette...
