    Female Head sculpt

I don't remember BIll Horan mentioning that he uses Dio-Sol for Duro. I think he just uses it for A&B - I could be wrong. Dio-Sol is no longer produced as far as I know. Thats probably a good thing. Barry

    Trying out Valleyo’s

Erik, I agree with the others. That is a very nice job, especially considering you are new to Vallejos. Jim is right about the Andrea Prussian blue. Andrea paints have to be the flattest paints out there. If you like the intensity of the Vallejo blue, just add a bit of the Andrea blue and...

    My first bust

Thanks for the advice guys. All the suggestions have been helpful. I have learned a lot on this project. Gary-Thanks for the scan. I bought the Steffen book based on your advice in a different thread. It's a great book. I just happened to find a book yesterday in a local used book store...

    Worl Expo 2005

I have booked a room and my wife and I are planning a week-long vacation around it. We've never been to Boston, so we're pretty excited. I like the sound of PF name tags. In fact, it would be nice to have them for Chicago too. If help is needed with these, let me know. Barry

    My first bust

Corrections, round 1: I brought the shoulders up and cut quite a bit off the bottom. I do think it looks a lot better. There is something I don't like about the eyes, and I can't quite put my finger on it. I think maybe the sides of the nose hit the brow with too sharp of an angle? Maybe...

The Day That Shook The World

Bob, At first, I was sceptical that the shadowbox portion of your diorama would work. But, after seeing the mockups- especially the one with the red filter, I like the feel of it a lot. This is a very creative piece and it's shaping up nicely. Good work! Barry

    My first bust

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys! Gary, that's exactly what I was hoping for. I sure appreciate you taking the time to help me out. He did look a bit too much like a weight-lifter, but I was just going to live with it. I will take your advice though and make the changes you drew. I...

    My first bust

I have dabbled with sculpting before, but this is my first complete bust. I intend for it to be a 3rd Continental Light Dragoon. I still have some tweaking on the face here and there and the ears ar roughed in for now. I'll go back in and detail them after the next bake. It is Sculpey III...

    Starting with Acrylics. What colours?

Andy, That's coming along nicely. It just goes to show that you don't just have to stick with the commonly used brands. Barry

    Starting with Acrylics. What colours?

Keith, Don't think of either/or with Andrea and Vallejo. I mostly use Vallejo, but I also have a few Andreas. Their dark blues and greens are dead flat, unlike Vallejo. I mix the two brands together quite often. I also have some Jo Sonjas and they are pretty nice. The only problem I've...

FigureBase: personal database 4 figure collectors

You might find Access much more powerful than excel for this kind of thing. It's a true database software in which you can query your items and is extremely customizable. You can directly import your Excel files into it. If you have Excel, chances are you also have Access. HTH, Barry

    help!

Just a little Andrea Prussian Blue will flatten the Vallejo dark blues. Another thing you can try is to add a little bit of deep orange(851) to dull out your dark prussian blue and black mix. This will make the color a bit more subdued without making it too light. Barry

    Work Area

I really need to clean up my area. But here it is in it's natural state. My wife and I both share our attic as a hobby/computer room and studio. This reminds me of those puzzle books for kids: How many unfinished figures can you find on Barry's table? Barry

    Oils vs. Acrylics for newbies

Marc, I think an important consideration is this: What look are you trying to shoot for? We all learn by emulating the techniques of painters whose work we admire. Basically, I think the process will be frustrating if you are, for example, inspired by a certain oil painter's work but start...
