    Continental Light Dragoons

I ordered The Horse Soldier 1776-1943 Volume 1 after I read Gary's post. I agree that it is a fantastic reference. It's exactly what I've been wanting. I accidentally ordered 2 of them, however. Don't ask me how that happened. I guess I had a few too many Heinekens? If anyone would like...

    Questions about Chicago show

I am making plans to go to the Chicago show in October and I have a couple of questions for those who have attended before. I couldn't find schedules of past shows. What generally happens on Sunday? I'm trying to decide whether to leave Sunday evening or Monday morning. Also, how much should...

    Splendeur Des Uniformes De Napoleon

Paul, I agree with Bert. The artwork is pretty naive. Don't expect Detaille or even the less impressive artwork from the Osprey titles. However, the detailed paintings of individual pieces of equipment are very useful. Barry

Anders, I love the subdued colors. Looks great! Barry

    7th Hussards

That's one of my alltime favorite movies. I waited for years for it to come out on DVD. I think it was Ridley Scott's very first feature length film after a career making TV commercials. The movie would be great even without the Hussar uniforms, but it does give you a feel for how they...

    My 2nd of the 44th

Angel, I'd say that's fantastic for your 2nd figure. Nice work - Keep it up! Barry

    88th New York Volunteers, 1863

Your SBS's are fantastic Gary. Hope you keep posting them - Very inspirational. I have struggled with shoulder belts. I'll give your method a try. Thanks for all work you go to to show us your techniques! Barry

    146th New York

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I used Flat Flesh with a little Mahogany Brown and Cavalry Brown as a base. Shadows have progressively more Mahogany Brown and Cavalry Brown. The deepest shadow is a mixture of Cad. Maroon and Black. Highlights have progressively more Flesh, the highest...

    146th New York

This is Shenandoah's venerable 54mm 146th New York Volunteer Infantry. This is a beautifully sculpted piece. I am just getting truly comfortable with acrylics. This is my 3rd figure with Vallejos. Let me know what you think. Barry

    shading and acrylics

Talino, Another possibility is that you are putting a shadow value on that is too dark. In other words, you need to progress in smaller steps of shading. Try going a little less dark for your first shadow tone. HTH, Barry

Lou, It seems to me also that what was on the sabretache was an individual thing. Here's another photo of a 6th Hussars sabretache. Barry

    Kamikaze bust......is a bust!

Another product that works great and has basically no chance of lifting paint is parafilm. It is commonly sold in hobby shops and is very easy to use. You just stretch it and lay it over the area you need covered and fine tune the edge to wherever you want it. I take it the teflon idea is...

    planetFigure - Inspirational

Hey Pete, Yeah, we have weird liquor laws, but you can get plenty here if you want it. Matter of fact, from what I've heard, the liquor laws in most of Penn are even worse than here! I could direct you to a couple of watering holes for your layover :) . Barry

    Mixing different putties

I have heard a few of you mention mixing different putties and even mixing Sculpey with Epoxy Putty. Which different products have you guys tried together and what are the results? What are the advantages of particular combinations? Last night, for the first time, I tried mixing duro and A&B...

    finding weapons to start sculpting

Shawn, I don't think anyone in the U.S. carries the Historex spare parts anymore. Squadron carries the complete kits and you can find Historex stuff pretty often on Ebay, but the bids get a little out of hand sometimes. Squadron carries a lot of the full kits and has had some great sales...

    Pastel chalk sticks

As far as I can tell, the pigments being marketed to modellers are good old paint pigment that you can buy at any good art supply store. In fact, I believe pastel sticks are the same pigments with a "binder" to keep them in a solid stick. If you are using small amounts to weather figures, the...

    SCAHMS PICS

I just got back to Salt Lake late last night from the show. I had a fantastic time. This was my first SCAHMS and It was incredible to see these figures in person. If you had told me 10 years ago that Bill Horan would get better, I would not have been able to see how that was possible. But...

    Sculpting/Painting References

Thanks Jim, Guy. I've been lurking for quite a while. I'll try to participate more now that I have a bit more time for figures. I wrote the title wrong in the above post. It should be "Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery." Barry
