Stormtrooper 1/9 Iroquois Indian 2 bust

I should note that this is also the first time I laid in the base colors using Liquitex acrylic gouache, as per Phil H's stellar SBS articles on the Spartan Hoplites and, most recently, on the Greco-Persian Wars. Phil's work is exemplary, his documentation superb, and the Liquitex paints have...

Stormtrooper 1/9 Iroquois Indian 2 bust

Hey, all - Sharing my most recent bust. A few new challenges on this one, but I'm calling it done (at least, for now). ;) Thoughts and comments welcomed!

    Question on Iroquois head dress

Thanks, Nap, but none of those look like what I'm seeing. I'm attaching two more pics, one a side view and one end view. The side view looks like it could be feathers, maybe, but the end view not so much (to my eye).

    Question on Iroquois head dress

Hey, all - I'm in the short rows on the Stormtrooper PPST40 Iroquois Indian 2 bust. The online illustrations I can find show that a long, sort of tassled piece (included in the kit) is attached in the middle of the head gear and extends out in back. However, I've had no luck in any other pics...

    Primer adhesion on metal figures

Hey, all - I'm working on a couple of metal figures, at the priming stage. I'm having some minor challenge with adhesion. Both are primed with Krylon Indoor/Outdoor spray can primer (flat black). Here are the deets: One is the Pegaso Tuscan Knight. Already into the painting, it seems that...

    Completed Greco-Persian Wars 75mm

"The key take away here is once the paint is applied to the model, clean your brush and use it to wipe off any excess paint that was applied. I do this 2 or 3 times to each area, and afterwards, I have a very thin, even layer of oil paint with no brush marks that looks incredibly smooth."...

    Completed Greco-Persian Wars 75mm

I've got to say that Phil - you've revolutionized the baseline for my painting! I picked up a basic set of the Liquitex acrylic gauche paints; base-coated one bust, working on another, and I'm SOLD!! (y)

    Confirming "metallics first" ... ?

Hey, all - When a separate part needs to be painted as metallic, it's often easier to paint it, finish it, then add it to the figure/bust. But often, items meant to be metallic are molded or cast in place on the subject. So? I seem to recall reading that one should generally paint "in place"...

    Completed Spartan Hoplites - 75mm

:woot: WHOA!! Just, WHOA!! ROFFAM!! I am beyond impressed! Am I correct in assuming the bases fit together, or are they totally separate? And I've recently gotten some chunks of cork bark; I'm looking forward to using one as a base for a display like this. Bravo, Phil!!

    Completed Spartan Hoplites - 75mm

Thanks! Next newbie question, then: When you're doing some fine, detailed painting like that, is there a rough ratio of paint-to-thinner that you find works best for you? I know there are a lot of variables involved, and what works for one person won't necessarily work as well for someone else...

    Completed Spartan Hoplites - 75mm

At the risk of cutting short this treasure-trove of information and 3-D examples, I'm sure you realize that what you're doing here - your descriptions, the quality photos, etc. - is absolutely worthy of a book, or at least a bound pamphlet. I've paid good money for modelling books that don't...

    Completed Spartan Hoplites - 75mm

Thanks, Phil! I get that you're using the AG for base-coating. I've been doing that with my favorite acrylics, but after seeing your work, I plan to give AG a try. I picked up a couple of bottles, but they're so much thicker than what I've been using that I didn't know if they needed to be...

    Completed Spartan Hoplites - 75mm

This is really marvelous writing, illustration, and information! Your technique really resonates with me, at least to the point that I tend to block in colors with acrylics, then shade and highlight with oils. But I'm a-gonna try the acrylic gouache paints now! I'm going to play the "newbie"...

    Anyone use UniProsca acrylic pens?

Here's an 8-minutet video on the basics of these pens, including blending. I'm not saying these are across-the-board substitutes for traditional processes, but they may open up better detailing capability for those without the brush skills:

    Anyone use UniProsca acrylic pens?

I took a chance and bought a set of these acrylic pens, extra-fine point. I've tried them on paper, and they seem just fine for dotting and lining, which could make certain detailing needs much easier. But before I put pen to bust, I thought I'd check and see if anyone has used them...

    Different brushes for different mediums?

SIDE QUESTION: "I know for sure that the brush manufacturers do make brushes for specific mediums." I've noticed that different lines are advertised - online and IRL - as for watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc. In fact, that's one reason for my original question. But I'm unclear on what the...

    Is this normal.........?

You gotta keep all the paints you use OUT OF THE RACKS until you're done. Otherwise, how're you gonna know what to use for the inevitable retouching? Unless you take meticulous notes on colors, proportions, and astrological positions ... :)
