    1/10 Magua bust ...

Thanks, all! NAP: The kerchief/neckcloth is molded as part of the bust.

    1/10 Magua bust ...

This is the Mitches Military Models 1/10 "Magua" bust. The earrings are modified HO-scale brake wheels (Kadee brand #2030), and I decided not to add the two feathers included with the kit. I continue to struggle with the blanket, and will likely go back for some refinements later on, but for...

    Starting painting figures.

OABTW: If you're using a hand brush for acrylics, consider investing in a decent "wet palette". I can mix until I'm happy, apply a coat, then close up the palette and let everything set overnight. Very flexible, and acrylics applied to a wet palette can be good for days, if not longer.

Choosing my first figure to paint in oils

@Wayne: Try building a simple plane, a tank, or even a car model. I've been building planes and tanks for years, even competing somewhat successfully. Hit a stall point, started several kits but just haven't been able to complete one. THEN, for some reason, I started a bust I'd bought. Then...

    Starting painting figures.

Having only recently "busted" into figures myself, I'll take a crack at your questions: What would be a good figure to practice/learn on? Kind of like "the single best exercise you can do", the absolute best figure to start on is one you like, but is comparatively simple in design. Simple, so...

    WIP Magua bust in progress

Hey, all - This is a bust I bought from Nap recently, to try some techniques. I found pics of a few finished busts online; I liked one in particular, so decided to use it as my model. This bust is maybe 70% done; in particular, the eyes/eyebrows are just roughed in, the cape needs finishing...

    Mystery part ...

I can see it in the box art now, but only because I know it's there. I thought it was a claw of some kind, part of the ornamentation, so I never even thought about looking in the hair. My robot-like cognition fails me again.

OMG!!! YOU'RE RIGHT!! Like so many things in life, it's obvious once you know the answer. Thanks!! ;)

    Mystery part ...

Hey, all - I have the Sabot Miniatures bust SMFB006 "Pueblo Indian". There are only three pieces: the main bust, the feathers, and a small, finger-like piece on a separate sprue (pictures attached). For what it's worth, the same part appears in both the 1/12 and the 1/6 kits. The box art is...

    Jeff Shiu ... still trading?

Key indicators for me are source location and price. From China or Russia, it's suspect; same if it's priced significantly below the norm for scale/subject. And if you have BOTH warning signs, it's pretty much assured. Another post-purchase clue is if it's not in the type/quality of boxing that...

Native American accoutrements: a crook shaft?

    Will do. Thanks again! :)

Native American accoutrements: a crook shaft?

@Valiant: Thanks; I had thought it might be a coup stick, but the descriptions of "coup sticks" I've found so far speak of it as a stick or switch, rather than a larger, shaped staff. The example in the kit looks to be maybe four feet or longer in scale. I'm so confused ... :(

Native American accoutrements: a crook shaft?

Hey, all - I finally got the La Meridiana Miniatures "Lakota Warrior" bust (BFR-31). One of the parts is what looks like a shepherd's crook. I've seen these occasionally in pictures and on shows, but it never occurred to me to wonder what it is until I'm going to model it. I did a little...

    Native American Indians

OH, AND - The lighting scheme and background color(s) you use in photographing your work will play tricks with the apparent color as well. My sons have commented that my busts look different in the pictures I take than they do in real life, in the same setting.

    Native American Indians

Hey, there - I'm new to figures and busts, but I've completed one native American bust, and working on another. I've also done a couple of Caucasian busts, and here's what I'm finding for flesh tones. For reference, I've been working with Mission Model Paints (MMP) acrylics. Once primed...

    Question: BestSoldiers shop

Hey, all - I placed an order with BestSoldiers on June 23. As near as I can determine, the order should have arrived between 19 to 36 days (I live in the USA); because it doesn't say either way, I'm assuming that's 36 calendar days. It's now been 43 days. I have emailed them twice in the...

    1/10 Sioux Lakota bust

Hey, all - This is the Black Dog brand 1/10 Sioux Lakota bust, item #B10018. A couple of notes: As supplied, the lower necklace is incomplete. The box art shows it complete, but a couple of sections are missing from the sculpt, or at least from the molding. Simple matter to add with a little...

    Questions on Sioux Lakota bust

Thanks for the warning, winfield! If you check the box art, you'll see some turquoise-colored beads, but most apparent are the large, turquoise-colored ear rings. I've been thinking of this bust as c. 1850-1900; based on your post, I did a little digging, and couldn't find any reference to...
