First bust ... almost done, need critique

Hey, all - I've been building 1/72 planes and tanks for years, but recently I've been working on my first bust, the Young Miniatures Roman Cavalry Officer 180 B.C. I apologize for the picture quality, but my photo setup isn't ready yet. I hope these are good enough for some pointed critique...

Australian Light Horse uniform colors: Sugg's sought

Hey, all - I'm new to figure modelling, and have started started the Model Cellar Australian Light Horse 1/9 bust (MC 19012). One of my points of wonderment about many (most?) figure kits is the absence of color references or guides beyond the box art, the perception of which is subject to a...

    UPDATE on "eye size"

Thanks so much to all who replied to my earlier "eye" post! In looking through this site, I found the "scaler". That drove me to the bathroom mirror with a ruler, to measure my visible eyeball top-to-bottom (height, not width/length). My supposedly-normal eye is 5/16" high, i.e. ~0.3125" (not...

Questions on British coats, French & Indian War era

    On eye size ...

Hey, all - A question on scale and eye size, more accurately: at what scale is it no longer worth trying to depict eyeballs? I model aircraft and armor. My chosen scale is 1/72, so much smaller than most serious figure subjects, and I rarely even try to depict eyeballs and irises, relying...

Questions on British coats, French & Indian War era

Hey, all - I'm about to start my second figure (haven't finished the first yet!), a native American from the French and Indian war. He wears a British coat, so red (or scarlet?) with broad lapels and gold lacing. But the boxtop, while in color, is a bit fuzzy, so a few questions come to mind...

    Adding heraldic devices

Excellent ideas and links - thanks to all!

    Adding heraldic devices

Hey, all - Still working on the Pegaso Tuscan knight. All the pics I've found show the figure with a heraldic design (a lion?) in yellow on the figure's right side. Is painting that by hand the only or best option? If so, does anyone have any thoughts on how to size and create that? My...

    Pegaso Tuscan Knight helmet ...

    Thanks! :)

    Pegaso Tuscan Knight helmet ...

Hey, all - I'm working on the Pegaso Tuscan Knight figure, which features a separate, brimmed "kettle" helmet. On the underside of the brim, at the rear, is a raised line of material running from the edge of the "head space" in the helmet center to the outer brim. That raised line is...

How long to let oil paints "weep"?

@Henk: I regularly use oils for weathering and post-shading planes and tanks, but except for some added pigment powder, I've never covered the oils with anything. I use an oil-paint wash over a matte or satin clear acrylic coat, then pin wash, then (perhaps) some dry-brush-style highlighting...

How long to let oil paints "weep"?

Hey, all - I don't know what I'm doing, so I'm using the best words I can think up. :) I'm planning to try oil paints on acrylic base; how long should I let the oil paint dabs sit on cardboard to wick off the excess oil? Is a couple of hours enough? Overnight? TIA for any help!

    1/10 "patches"?

Thanks, Martin. On the flags, the WWII-era, 48-star version is more appropriate for the bust.

    1/10 "patches"?

Ok. You talked me into it. I'll try painting the patches. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? I strip it off and start over? It's a hobby, right? ;) Seriously, though, the thought of those 48 itty-bitty stars leaves me a bit cold. Any hints/tips on how to do those in this scale?

    1/10 "patches"?

Hey, all - I just received a Young Miniatures 1/10 bust YM1824 US Paratrooper, 82nd AB, Normandy 1944. Beautiful casting! Looking ahead (waay ahead), I can't for the life of me imagine painting the unit patch on the shoulder, much less the American flag on the other shoulder. Surely someone...
