    Samurai reference

I have a pretty good collection of samurai references, so here are some titles you might look for: There are three excellent references by Dr. Mitsuo Kure, an historian and figure modeller. 1) Samurai: An Illustrated History (ISBN 0-8048-3287-0) features old Japanese artwork, photos of...

    mould construction

I have a small amount of experience with sand casting, and I can't imagine it would be a useful technique for miniature work. First, as Einion said, the sand grains wouldn't allow the level of detail on the average 90mm-120mm figure, and the sand would impart an overall grainy texture to the...

    Epoxy shelf life

Yeah, that's the stuff I'm talking about, kind of a yellowy-tan color, but it's not crusty, it's gummy. Knead the hardener for a bit, and it mixes right back in. Mike

    Epoxy shelf life

I have some Magic Sculp that's about 6 years old. Had no problems other than the hardener separates, but all I have to do is knead the hardener before I mix the two parts together. It works fine and sets up properly.

    super sculpey FIRM

I believe you can use Sculpey Clay Softener. I have also heard of people using lighter fluid.

    Sculpting mediums

I've used MagicSculp, Milliput, Kneadatite, and Super Sculpey. Obviously, the first 3 are epoxy based products that you are allergic to. The Super Sculpey has similar working characteristics to MagicSculp, but it is not self-hardening-- it must be baked, and sometimes it can crack during the...

    perry miniatures A.C.W.

I'm a huge fan of the Perry minis, although my interest is in the samurai range. They put out a well sculpted, nicely cast product at a great price. While I'm not especially interested in the ACW, I have thought of getting a set of the plastic figures just to see how they compare with the metal...

    Question about Historical Accuracy

Guy, I believe that the armor on these figures is from the same time frame. The problem lies in the fact that that time period is after Tokugawa Ieyasu united Japan, and there was relative peace for the next 250 years. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the only major campaign was the...

    Figure pricing

American forum members better get used to it. As long as the dollar is in free fall compared to other currencies, anything made overseas is going to cost more. As of this morning: 1$US = 0.68 Euro 1 Euro = 1.46 $US 1$US = 0.47 GBP 1 GBP = 2.10 $US 1$US = 0.93 $CAN 1$CAN = 1.07 $US...

    "Goodbye Old Man"

I hate to butt in on someone else's idea, but I just went through a situation pertinent to this diorama, so I thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I recently had to put down my 17 year old dog, Rudy, who I called "Old Man" for the last 3 or 4 years. While I knew it was time to do the merciful thing...

    New Ronin in 90 mm

"Among the most famous ronin are Miyamoto Musashi, the famed swordsman, and the Forty-seven Ronin." Miyamoto Musashi was not a ronin, but rather a shugyosha. A shugyosha was a wandering swordsman who was after knowledge of the way of the sword. Musashi was never a samurai without a master...

    Light over the bench.....

Hi Anastasios, I use daylight when possible, but my workshop has basic, cheap forescent fixtures, and I also use a Chromalux 100W incandescent bulb and a 13 W florescent Ott-Light lamp. These lamps do a good job of color correction, but color correction is less of a problem for me than being...
