Hi, this is my current WIP. I don't get to paint large scale figures very often, but felt like finally tackling it as I've had it standing around near my desk for a year and due to another project I felt like using some oil paints (in combination with acrylics).

It's a very pretty bust by CGS Military Figures. Of course through the lense of the camera the whole thing looks quite different to what it looks like in my mind's eye.

...especially the close-up of the face here. The strong lighting may have eaten up lots of the shade I was sure I painted on, but may in fact be just natural shade.

(what looks like a bold artistic choice in accentuating the cheek bone in a rather comicbook-looking way is just the shadow of the hat's strap)

Anyway, that's the state of things I hope that you lke it so far.

At this point I'm not quite happy with :
.) Some of the texture I painted on on the folds on the right under arm.
.) The hat bands have to be tidied up.
.) There's still lots of stuff to be done with the face. I think I could go on painting on shade and subsequently blend it into nothingness again.
.) The pattern on the (nec)kerchief/cravate is uneven if you compare left and right near the knot.
.) The hair needs more work.

So that's the main things I can identify for now. I'm hoping for some feedback from you. Many thanks in advance.

edit: Right, I got how attaching pictures works now. I'll try to remove the photo I attached several times.

Maybe a few more highlights on the hair, but I think it's superb as it is. Part of the art of painting is knowing when to stop!

That's a very good self critique you have done , covered all I can think of for sure , agree the lighting might have affected the fleshwork

Pics this large really do not help , we never see this size so credit to you for posting them

@Babelfish: Thanks, that's very true indeed.

@Nap: Cheers. Yes, I had a look at some of the things I realized were problematic, fixed some of them, others I just left as they are and decided to use it as a lesson for the future.

@steeleagle: Thanks very much. Yes, if I get to paint an old west gunslinger type, I thought it's a nice occasion to go a bit grimy.

@Steve Ski: Much obliged. He isn't that much in the film, but I used those scenes as reference. Only thing I changed was the eye colour, since I read that the actual guy was blue-eyed (and fair-haired, according to an eye witness I read), and it goes better with the jacket and how the eyes are in the shade of the hat.


Right, I redid some thing (minimal work on the face and the left hand, some on the hat and so on. All rather boring. The main thing I did though - and which I'm very happy with - is add dust to his jacket and to the hat a little bit, so it all looks a bit more worn and like he's been through the desert on a horse with no name a few times.









Also note that I used a white backdrop this time, as I actually prefer to do.
