Afrika Korps - Messerschmidt Bf-110-color photo-ww2shots-air force tropical helmet.jpg

This is a bit of a hybrid, which has come about in an attempt to use up some parts from the spares box. I'm hoping to depict a Luftwaffe officer in tropical uniform, perhaps of the Hermann Goering Division. The parts include this torso from Verlinden's Otto Skorzeny bust and a helmet from the ESCI 1/9 German infantry figure:

The ESCI figure is terrible, but some serviceable equipment can be salvaged from it.

The helmet fits a large 1/9 head, and the only thing that I knew would be big enough is included in this Altores Studio academy set:

I've used all of these before and they are lovely sculpts. I thought is was worth buying again for the European head as the other two could easily be used for conversions in the future.

After hacking away at the neck to get it to fit onto the torso, and finding that the helmet fitted perfectly, I started painting:

I made a chin strap, added the rivets and ventilators to the helmet using blobs of PVA and painted on the insignia.

Stage one complete.

Hi Peter

Good on you for combining the various parts ...and showing some rather nifty reworking putting it together

The head looks fine in the helmet and nicely painted as well ....the Altores academy sets certain,y useful

Look forward to seeing the next stage

Happy benchtime

Good idea and a great start on the face and helmet. You have quite a spares box.

Nap - I find making up figures from spares particularly satisfying. Feels like something for nothing.

Graham - 'Classic Peter Day'' worries me...... Glad you approve though.

Mike misfit - Many thanks.

Mike clrsgt - I've got several shoe boxes full of 1/16 stuff, but only a small box of bust spares, none of which fit together, unfortunately. Glad you like him so far.

Chris - Sorry for the delay in replying - I've been a bit off- colour so haven't felt like sitting at the computer. Glad you approve.

Sorry people, this wasn't much of a WIP - he's now finished:

I found that I couldn't get a clean finish on the iron cross, which was a bit battered, and seeing that it was oversized anyway, I decided to resort to the Milliput and give him a scarf. Doing so also provided the opportunity for adding a bit of colour. Apart from that, the Verlinden torso was really nice to paint. The base for the jacket was Vallejo Green Grey mixed with Off White and German Camo Black Brown for shading.

Really nice Pierre,Just had our first vaccines.Bit off colour but onwards and upwards mate.Good to see you enjoying sharing your work here,
Rich

A classic ‘Peter Day’ face.

Morning Peter

I have to disagree with the above, as your face painting has moved up the ladder several rungs.

There is a more subtle shading and blending on this head in particular.

The sculpt has certainly given your a superb canvas for your painting and you have done it proud.

The finished bust looks like a head and shoulders photo rather than a painted model, one of your best, and certainly a front of cabinet contender.

Well done.

Hopefully a good day with your next victim

Take care

Regards

Morning Steve and thanks for your very kind words.

If there has been any improvement it's due to the influence of the superb work found on this site. It's been a spur to try and up my game, though the downside has been to become perhaps even more self-critical.

I'm pleased that you like this one. Probably an El Greco bust next.

Peter.

Mike - Many thanks.

Steve - Something I especially enjoy doing. I've used your heads on a number of similar projects.

Nap - Very kind of you - glad you like him (the scarf hides a multitude if sins). Bad bout of sinusitis limiting benchtime at the moment. Hey. ho.
