Hey all! Here's the latest pics of my Airborne trooper. The helmet netting and straps are all scratchbuilt. Since these pics were taken, I've added charcoal camo on the face and hands.
Well, here's the 99% completed figure. Still to do is the rifle strap, the compass part of the wrist compass and final details on the luminous disk. Then I'll be fit to work on the base.
It's coming along pretty good. I hate to be a nitpicker, but the 101st. Airborne did not wear the US flag on the right sleeve during the Normandy landings. Sorry.
Scott,
Where exactly is the luminescent disk on the helmet? It was worn on either the front or the back of the helmet. Also, what's your formula for the khaki? It looks just like the real thing.
Hi. Great job.
Maybe it is the camera flash, but isn't the clothing a too shiny?
I'd airbrush some dullcoat varnish after all painting job ( cover skin and helmet ). It' ll add more fabric like realism.

The luminous disk is around his left boot. I considered putting a second one on the helmet, but opted out. I know many were worn on the helmet, but I've also seen pics of them worn around the leg.
The khaki is a mix of Tamiya XF-57 Buff and Tamiya White.
I'll be dull-coting the figure once he's finished.
Ah, I see. At first glance, I thought that was a compass around his ankle. Perhaps it's the size that made me think this? I too have seen pictures of troopers iwth luminescent disks around their ankle, as well as their wrist and webbing. I've also seen a few pictures of them wearing a compass around their ankle - I'd imagine that finding your bearings that way would be "odd" at best
I suppose only the most flexible of soldiers would wear the comapss on their ankles. Lots of contortions would be required to level the compass and get your face in position to read it. Ouch!
Nice conversion, great job on the netting! Just thought that you need more contrast in the "button-line" of the figure, I could barely pick out the highlights/shadows, or maybe it's just the photo. And the line you drew at the bottom of the pockets - a little too stark, but can't really put a finger to it on what's wrong.
Did you mean the darkness of the lines on the hip level jacket pockets? they were lined on the outside edges with the same olive fabric used on the trouser pockets. I used the same color. It may just be the photo's contrast which makes them look odd?
