Hi

I am working on Maurice's 16th Lancer figure, I have got some reference for the uniform but could use some extra information on certain details. Does anyone know of a good refrence source?

Regards

Neil

Osprey Publications had (I think) description/picture of 16th Lancers in its series The Victorian Army on Campaign. These books, four in number, are excellent but may be out-of-print. Another source, also hard to obtain, is British Cavalry Uniforms by Michael Barthorp. Or, just Google "battle of aliwal" and you should get several color images of both troopers and officers.

If you have specific uniform questions, I`m sure someone here can assist, or point you to the correct place.

I have the same figure in queue and gathered a number of decent images. If you can tell me exactly what you're looking for I may be able to help. I have images of plates and actual and reconstructed uniforms.

Cheers

Colin

I don't know if this helps Neil?

Thanks all

I have the Barthorp book and its great for the front view.

There is suprisingly little on the web showing any detail, even the lancers museum dosent seem to have much to offer re this period.

Its very fine detail I am short of, mainly rear view, eg details of the cartridge box (i'm sure its mainly silver gilt) the belt loop, ie what material and colour is it. Round the front the stable jacket collar is open and I have come to the conclusion that its a plain undershirt without collar.

Colin, would appreciate you sharing anything you have, in return if I have found anthing you havent, I will send you the links.

Cheers

Hello Neil, I took a look in my books and fund this in " Richard Simkin´s Uniforms of the British Army - Cavalry".
For Aliwal, the 16th Lancers wore white helmet cover with neck protection and sabretaches without ornamentation.
Hope, this will help you a little.

Cheers Thomas

Colin, the rear view of the uniform is great for the pouch and belt detail thanks. Have a look at http://www.qrlassociation.co.uk/m_home.htm the Lancers Museum site.

Edward, thanks for this, still a classic piece of work from the master.

Stu, thats great thanks, I never got this mag, which edition is this from? You can pick copies up on ebay if you know whats what. Did they ever produce a catalouge of editions and contents do you know, anything Crimea and just prior would be a great find for me.

Due to all of this help I think I am now sorted.

Thanks

Neil

Hi guys,

I am sorry to revive this thread - feels appropriate to continue.

I have same figure and planning to do a little vignette with a horse, sort of Aliwal after the battle. Has anyone got pics of suitable horse harness and saddle appropriate for the battle?

Also would you be kind to suggest some items - I got sikh shield made to drop on the ground and was thinking a few cannon balls, can anyone suggest say, a cannon that sikhs may have used so I can put a broken one? Or any other small items to scatter around?

Thank you in advance

Have a look at Osprey British cavalry Equipments for the harness detail, its a good start. The cannon used by the Sikhs were very ornate, lion head ornaments etc there are pictures online. In terms of other bits and pieces, Tulwars and persian type helmets may work.

good luck

Neil

Thanks Richie, had a look now. You are an information mogul, my friend:)

Neil - thank you, that may work - I was going to ask how your project ended, as I haven't seen a finished thread - unless I was daft and missed it.

Hi Dimitry

I didnt post it, not good enough. Plus I am crap with the camera. I am concentrating on large scale half figure busts at the moment and did the Stormtrooper 16 officer which is a fantastic kit.

Just remenebred Osprey Queen Victorias Enemies 3 is good for Sikh info, if you reaaly want to get into the spirit get hold of
'All for shilling a day' by Donald Featherstone, well OOP but you can find it online, a great dramatised read on the 16th inIndia based on fact.

Cheers
