OK, since the cat has been let out of the bag (I did post this on MedRom a couple of weeks ago) I might as well own up to the gloat. Come to think of it, if I wanted to keep this a deep dark secret, gloating over on MedRom was not a particularly sensible thing to have done. However, I was so pleased with the result that I could not resist it. This is the second bust that Shane has done for me (the first one, an Anniversary present from my late wife, was of a 2nd CBC Roman wearing a Montefortino helmet - 2nd Punic War period) and on the strength of that one, I decided to ask him to do another one for me. He is, indeed, a superb sculptor. I sent him the details and at each stage of the build, he sent me a photo to check that he was getting it right. The helmet is based on one which is on display at the British Museum. Now, of course, I have to paint the thing and try and match Shane's skill as a sculptor!
I agree (of course) with all the positive comments above. The whole point about a private commission, of course, is that it's a "one-off". I just wish that I had Shane's skills as a sculptor. As I don't I am more than happy to have him do one of these little chaps for me from time to time. In case you would like to appreciate Shane's work a little more, I am uploading a photo of the earlier commission I mentioned above. Don't concentrate on the painting, just admire Shane's ability!
