Hello all-
A few folks were kind enough to ask about this project, so I put a small gallery together. It's my first significant conversion project, so I still have a lot to learn before I feel like I can get it all right.
The work was inspired by (or stolen from) Western genre artist Charles Deas. I saw the painting in a book and loved the dynamic composition. I remembered the bit in Shep Paine's diorama book about avoiding static vignettes, so this felt right in terms of action.
The horses are Historex with slight reposing, and the figures are Preiser and an old Airfix Scot's Greys body for the trapper. Groundwork is built over foam and has N-scale plaster rocks from a Woodland scenics mold on the edges and celluclay for the forest floor. The leaf litter and vines are a combo of Hudson and Allen ivy and general stuff gathered from the yard.
My painting is all done in oils over Jo Sonya acrylic gouache. I'm getting better, but still have a lot to learn.
Looking at it now I see all kinds of flaws, but I'm still happy with it for a first effort.
Thanks for asking about it! I'd appreciate advice & critiques to help planning future projects.
