Given my passion for the Normandy landing, I wanted to honor the memory of this important anniversary by creating at least one subject from a unit that participated in this great historical event.
I then came up with the idea of this subject inspired by a work by the great Calvin Tan, who, starting with a Tamiya truck driver, created a USN sailor.
I chose the figure from the Alpine Miniatures catalog.
So I started from what is proposed as a tank crew, to turn it into a engineer of the 5th ESB (Engineer Special Brigade) who landed on the beach of Omaha with the task of cleaning it from anti-tank obstacles, mines and to open the way out from the beach to allow the troops to break through the enemy lines.
I then removed the beautiful Colt to replace it with a more appropriate bag for the gas mask self-made with Magic Sculpt and with Royal Models buckles; also the added canteen is always from the Royal Models range.
The patch on the left shoulder was also carved.

Well heck, why didn't I think of doing that:wideyed:!

That's brilliant Enrico. Creative idea, beautifully painted and very well presented. The colors look just right and I like the inclusion of the paint worn off the helmet rim. Yes sir, that's top notch work there(y)!

Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked the idea and I hope that many others follow this example, that is to take a simple figure and represent units, maybe not fighters, not represented, but important at the same time.
Also the study of the land has had its importance, because usually we imagine the beaches of Normandy as all of sand, but the Omaha, near the exits, was composed of pebbles.
So I had to sculpt the stones one by one (I assure you that they are really small) but that I believe that once the work is done they perfectly make the ground as it is in reality.

Flawless painting.A master's work trully.Well painted with smooth transition betweeen hues and colours, well based and balanced it looks deceitfully simple. It takes long practice to be able to produce such complete and well staged scenes.Hats off to you sir.

Oda.

Bull, great job on your conversion! Like the attention to detail and your paint choices. (y) Very nice piece of work! Love the ground work and staging. And how you shot the cover of Yank Magazine and incorporated your figure onto it! Very cool! Would love the piece in person! Don't know where you live, but would encourage you to bring your work to Atlanta, GA for our Military Figure Show in February. see our website for details at www.atlantafigures.org. Thanks for sharing! I believe you have honored those who served in this campaign with your work in miniature.

All the Best, Terry Martin-Member of the Atlanta Military Figure Society of Atlanta, GA
