Here's an interesting look at some Zouaves from the 5th New York. I believe this image was taken at Camp Butler near Fort Monroe. Aside from being a great Zouave image there are some details that stand out. A few of them wear caps/kepis while a few of them are wearing their turbans underneath their fezzes like a havelock or sun shade. American Zouaves seem to lack that "look" that their European counterparts have. I guess something has to be said for the effect that being in the field has on their dress no matter how fancy.~Gary

Cool picture Gary! Where did you find that? I've never seen that one before. They sure don't look like 5th NY as you'd normally picture them.

Super image! Yeah, you won't see that "look" in any painting...or figure. The 5th was far from the pretty zouaves we imagine. Especially during the 2nd Bull Run campaign where they were in the field since the Peninsula that spring!

It's interesting to see one of their comrades from the 10th NY (fella with the double striped pantaloons).

Neat to see one with a slouch hat. Also the guy with the havelock type cover. I've seen a similiar image somewhere that show the havelock under the fez...Now thats a figure!

Wanna bet?lol

Though I can't remember his exact words the British observer Arthur Fremantle made a few remarks regarding the dress of Federal zouaves.~Gary

Zouave was the name given to certain infantry regiments in the French army, as well as to units in other armies which imitated the dress or drill of the French zouaves.

Jason, Too bad they don't have a "fat farm" for reenactors that just need to shed 20-30lbs to be at least close to period wieght. Daily marches and the diet alone would do the trick.~Gary
