Hi all hope you are all ok. Well I should be languishing in the garden with an iced Pimm's drink but with this appalling British weather I'm have to get on with my brushes...:)
Always a bright side......these two are from Bonaparte's Military Models and beautifully sculpted by the very talented Richard Bailey........fabulous character..great detail and composition of his figures.....very early stages and loads to paint the Saxon Garde is well on the way with helmet and face done and the rest undercoated ready for the oils..
The Duchy drummer I've only just started and blocking in some acrylic colours.....

OMG is that the sun.......no just rain. Thanks for looking (y). Mike

Hi Mike

Great use of rainy weather , like both busts , Richard is a talented sculptor and the sculpts certainly paints up well which we can see here

Really like the way the Saxon crest is looking and a good yellow so far

Good start on the other as well

Following with interest

Happy benchtime

Hi Mike

I’ve never tried a bust before, but these two are beautiful. I haven’t seen either before, but you’ve certainly tempted me to try one. Even at the early stages of your work I can see that they are going to look great. I’m definitely going to follow you here and see what I can learn.

Thanks for sharing.

Kev,

You will find both of those on Bonapartes Military Model Shop. You will enjoy painting busts. They allow you to really push you skills and try new things. Lots of great busts out there in the market covering all time periods.

Many thanks for looking in Kev.....have a look on their website some really unique figures and busts...(y). Mike

Great start to both of these! Awesome job with the faces. How do you do the "five o'clock shadow"? Really like the look - visible but not overpowering.

Hi there and thank you for looking in......a quick run through my technique for the five o clock shadow....I paint all my figures and busts in oils...
Once you have started your face area and have worked on the shadows and highlights and probably the day after you have made a start.have a look at the face and then in my case add a speck of blue black or Payne's grey oil to the highlight tone you would have mixed the previous day.
Then with a small dry and old brush mix a little shadow colour. Then I dry the brush on tissue or whatever you use .....there will always be some colour on the brush.... I gently stipple the dark mix onto the chin area .....remember less is more....you can take the mix under the chin and as far up the face as you wish......I don't mix the same five o clock shadow every time as it is impossible to get the exact mix again....
Try a couple of mixes and you can add different colours to the f o s ......sometimes I add a speck of Mars brown......but have a go and practice ....
All the best and take care....(y). Mike

Wow. You are indeed setting the bar high..
I'm currently also working on the Drummer bust, and I will be following this closely. The face looks incredible.
What are you basing the colour of his uniform/czapka on?

Hi Henk and thanks for looking..... You're dead right it is a stunning bust and it's only when you start the painting you appreciate the detail....
I found this illustration and hoping to do the drummer on the right...(y). Mike. I like the chevrons on the drum.

Mike, that image depicts a drummer from a different regiment, the figure has a 1 on the plate on the Czapka, denoting the 1st regiment. I think the drummer on the right is supposedly from the 5th (I think) regiment. I only know this, because Martin Bohrmann pointed this out (the guy is a walking encyclopedia lol).
I'll post the images i have, but you can find them in my SBS also.

Had to swap over to my tablet...
The first and second picture is a drummer of the 1rst regiment.
