Hi all,

I'm looking for additional info on the early war uniform of the above. I have one painting of an enlisted rifleman by Don Troiani and another of a captain by Jeff Burn. Both depict the overall gray uniform with buttonless zouave jacket and baggy trousers (but not as baggy as most Zouave regiments). The jacket is depicted with red trim around the neck, down the front and around the lower back. The enlisted man is wearing a standard blue shirt, but the officer is wearing a gray vest with a red center placket and brass buttons. The officer is also depicted with a red knotted decoration on the trouser sides starting at/near the waist and descending to about the knee. Both figures are wearing a normal appearing black-billed kepi with a red top. The Troiani painting also depicts the kepi with additional red trim around the lower band and the vertical quarter seams.

Both illustrations pop up early in this search:

There are some other period photos in B&W that show up, but these appear to be late ACW after the switch to the Federal blue uniform. I'm looking for any additional illustrations or written descriptions clarifying the early gray uniform(s). You see, I have this 120mm Ft Duquesne Union Zouave figure and my wife is from Indiana...

Cheers,

Glen

Crickets. Nothin' but crickets... I guess I'm between further research and winging it. Maybe IN has a historical archives office I can talk to. If I find anyhing, I'll post it.

Cheers,

Glen
