Stephen and Anders, many thanks for taking a look and the positive comments, it's been very enjoyable so far.

Matt, thanks very kindly for the links..especially the last one by Bradely Schmehl, I hadn't seen that one before and it shows some turbans being worn too..

If you happen to come up with anything further on the turban it'll be a real bonus.

Many thanks for your effort and comments.

Cheers..Roy.
Not a problem, it's what I do

Roy, You didn't mention the size of the figure (head) but on my computer screen the only thing missing are the pores in his skin!! You have done an incredible job doing the wrinkles and putting in personality.

And what is the backround on your ear models?

Dear Roy,

I know that ears are very hard to reproduce in a convincing way. And yes they are as a fingerprint, being unique for every human being. Now that you've shown a side view of the head I think that it's not so much the size but instead the angle of the ear that gives a wrong impression. The ear looks to be leaning backwards as you'll notice on the photo I've added. The yellow lines give the actual angle of the ears in relation to the front of the face, where as the red line points out the angle how it should be (all IMHO of course). I think by correcting this the whole will get a completely other look. Hope to be helpful with this.

Gary..Thanks for the link, that's an excellent site with a great deal of info..it's certainly worth a thorough look. I shall send them a polite request for some info on the turban as the other guys haven't responded yet.

Joe..thanks for the very kind comments, he's around 1/8th scale.
If you're refering to the 2 guys in the picture, I'm pleased to say I know nothing about them..I just had a thought, they could be modellers.

Johan..you've got me seeing ears every which way I look..I can't stop looking at people's ears... thankyou for taking such a thorough look at this guy...I'm looking at a few artists books that I have here, mainly on drawing, and one big difference that I noticed when comparing the ears to those in the various diagrams is that one artist (Joseph Sheppard in his book: Anatomy, the complete guide for artists) says that the top of the ear must be on a horizontal line with the eye-brow, and the bottom of the ear-lobe level with the nasal spine...well mine is way out on this assumption, so I look at another book (Anatomie Artistique by Dr Paul Richer, The one I have has French text so I'm a bit stumped with the reading) and He's beautiful drawings and diagrams show the whole ear to be much lower..so I guess we all interpret things a little differently. The tilt of the ear that you mention, may well be toward the rear but I think it looks o.k. You'll notice the brow is also angled toward the rear, this is not exactly normal either, but intentional, as I wanted a rackish look to the face, because the figure is invisioned as advancing toward his enemy, so for me, it works well enough and I'm reasonably satisfied with the result so far.
All that you have mentioned will be great food for thought , and I will bear in mind all your points and take extra care on any further pieces to be as precise as I can and I'm sure they will steadily improve as I get a little better at transfering what I see, to what I sculpt.

Very many thanks Johan....cheers..Roy.

As always Roy superb work, you seem to always get great character into your faces, and you are ok this time he does'nt remind me of anyone!!!

The two guys in the photo are brothers Bernie and Bart and they work at my local wing nut factory!!!!!!!

Cheers Steve Walks

Cheers Stephen..thanks for your encouragement, it's always good to get your opinion.
Let's hope that you won't be needing to pick-up any wing-nuts then... :)
All the best...Roy.

Here is a short update on the bust, not a great deal to look at, but I should have further pictures later today with any luck.
Un-cured Super Sculpey from the neck area was removed to expose the support rod and the piece was heated and cured.
Then to make a support for the neck and shoulders, some fuse wire (this is 30 amp) was used to wrap around the brass rod and make an easily poseable armature support for the shoulders. It should also provide a good key for the application of fresh Sculpey. As you'll notice, the face looks a little different when cured as all the solvent has evaporated leaving a very matt surface.

Once again, thanks for taking a look. Your comments are always welcome as usual.

All the best..Roy

Just another little update so far today. I thought you might be interested to see how I build up the neck area.

Thanks for checking this guy out...Roy.

Here is some Super Sculpey applied to act as a support for the neck and shoulder areas.
I've scored it with a blade to help with the application of the next layer.

After the rough layer is heated and cured, I've applied some more to bulk out the neck and shoulders a little.
This is worked into the existing surface fairly roughly, as long as it's almost in the right place it can be moved around a little as needed.

Here is the mass for the neck smoothed and blended into the head. Still lots of work to do here, although the majority of the flesh will be hidden, I will add some texture on the neck when I'm satisfied it looks reasonable.

Here is another update on the bust. These 2 pictures show the texture of the skin worked into the neck
by gently scribing lines where needed and softening the marks with a synthetic brush moistened with diluent.
I also added a little thickness to the overall size of the neck.

Many thanks for looking, all comments, questions, criticism or observations are always more than welcome.

All the best..Roy.

My paint brushes started shaking in their holders..........awesome detail Roy. I look forward to the finished bust.

Hello Roy
Complimenti a lot interesting this busto

delicious all the texture of the skin.......
is much onlooker to see this piece complete.

Good job. ;)

Guy, many thanks for the positive comments, I'm glad you like the way he's coming along.
Gary..many thanks, it's a simple method and seems to work reasonably well. I'm looking closely at the various pictures of the vest, with it's side buttoning arrangement. A very unusual garment. As they obviously lack a front opening I will have to pay special attention to the trim sewn to the front and around the neck opening.
Maurizio..thank you, it's a lot of fun to get the texture on the skin, and in this large scale, it would be a shame to leave it out.
Matthew & Joe thanks for keeping a check on my work, all the comments help keep up my level of enthusiasm. I hope to get a little more of this one done on Sunday or Monday, so I look forward to that.

Thank you very kindly for your encouragement...Roy.

Hey Roy.... you've got the hang of this sculpting lark!!!!

Looking awsome mate, remember to save one for me if you cast the guy up.

(I wonder if I'll need a wingnut to fix him to the plinth?)

Cheers Steve Walks

Thanks Steve, I hope you can get away with something a little lighter duty.
I should be able to get some further work done on this one over the next couple of days.

Roy.

Hello guys, here's an update on where I am at the moment.
You'll notice I chose to have this guy wearing a shirt instead of the vest pictured earlier in the thread.

Again, many thanks for taking a look....and to Gary for the many, many photo's.
