What a beauty!! To me it looks very much like a salt water crocodile rather than an alligator, but I'm sure you are right. Never mind, the wehole piece is superb, and your groundwork is excellent.

Please take this in the spirit for which it is intended and for your asking for comments. I live in Florida and see them almost daily. In fact one is foolish to go near any body of water, including open swimming pools without first looking. In the wild, you assume that every body of water has an alligator.
Alligators are almost black. They have eyes higher on their skulls and are black (not the cat eye like you have depicted, that is more crocodillian). Their snouts are rounded and the interior of their mouths is a buff or appears white from a distance. Their undersides are similar in that they are a cream or very light buff color. In younger gators there will be a hint of striation or that classic reptillian striping you see on dinosaurs so often. This recedes down the sides as they get older and may disapear or only show up on the tail as they are mature.
I like what you've done here and the environment is wonderful. Looks like prime gator habitat.

C is gator, D is croc

The reason it is important here in Florda to know the difference is that we have both crocodiles and alligators and the tempermant between the two is very different. Cuban crocs or keys crocs are shy, will run more often than attack but when they do, its lightning fast and are better ambush predators than gators. Gators will climb fences to get at dogs, small kids etc. and can be agressive certain times of the year. Also because of the propensity for very stupid people to want to keep exotic animals and the frequency of hurricane damage loosing these exotics we get the occasional surprise of finding large marine crocodiles or african crocodiles showing up in canals or swamp areas. Knowing the difference can save your life.

Beautiful work indeed. I can see some action and maybe someone is standing beside the tree with fear and panic caused by this monster surprisingly came up? Well done.
