WIP Almost finished. Roman armoured infantryman 243 AD

Soldiers 54 mm. Adriano Laruccia. I just completed attaching the right arm. As can be seen in one of the pics some filling was necessary. This will be followed by retouching. Attaching the left arm and scutum will be the last stage.

Painted in oils. Bronze parts, the lorica Hamata and the greaves are done with printer's ink.

The face and the teeth were the hardest part to paint. The helmet encloses the face almost completely so you have to paint in a confined area that is actually hard to reach with the brush.

The first pic is the largest one and can be blown up to full screensize. But unfortunately I could't get it in the correct position. The others are slightly smaller but still show good sharp detail.

Pics were taken with my Samsung Edge using flashlight.

In any large scale that would be a tremendous paint job but in 54 mm, it is nothing less than jaw-dropping. Kudos indeed!

Does anyone know if another company has bought the molds? I am especially interested in the 90mm stuff he sculpted. I held off on buying a few of them and was saddened to find I can’t get them anymore.

Masterclass took over. But I don't know if they continued all of the 90 mm. I don't know if you are interested in Romans but if you can find it buy the Gladiator Laruccia did for Soldiers. He looks a bit stupid in the boxart but I can assure you it is a fantastic figure. If you brwose through my posts you'll find a thread about him

I didn't read what you wrote correctly. Masterclass took over from Marco Luchetti .But I recall having seen an announcement that they stop too.

You might want to take a look on the Art Girona website. They seem to have quite a stock left.

There was a notification on their website a few days before going out of business.The english was not the best but I gathered it was some kind of club or cultural organization and that Masterclass passed them their line or part of it to use at their discretion should they choose to do so.

Printer's ink. Gold & silver (El Greco Miniatures sells them).

Mixed with black or dark brown oilpaint to get the desired colour or shade. Advantage: you can shade, highlight and blend as with normal oilpaints. I feel it gives me maximum control over the process.

I also add (depending how fast I want the mix to dry) a little Winsor & Newton fine detail medium or lineseed oil. This acts as an extra binder.

When I use the ink pure with no oilpaint added (for highlights) I only add some lineseed oil.

When everything is dry I apply controlled washes and pinpoint oilpaint washes. Or I use undiluted oilpaint in a stippling mode to obtain oxidation effects for example.

I dry the final result under a 100 watt bulb. This makes it possible to work fast. With Fine Detail Medium added for example the drying time of a helmet can be reduced to say 1 hour.

All the metal on the figure was painted like that. I never use the metal of the figure as a base.
