The potential for relevant (poignant?) newspaper stories on his hat is tremendous.

From his dress I suppose it has to be C20th... and according to this, spiral binding (as per his sabretache) started 1932, so from the toy soldiers' situation (one trying to hold back the many) perhaps Dunkirk?

This one would work well: otherwise lot's more here.
