There are numerous sources for thicker aluminium foils that we can harvest for this kind of thing Brian but if you need a piece 10cm square the only option I can think of is a Chinese or Indian takeaway container; although there's a lot of use of plastic now the rice is still often served in an aluminium tray.

In terms of priming, although there are specialist primers for aluminium they're overkill for this kind of thing, any parts made from aluminium or an aluminium alloy can be primed perfectly well using car primer (e.g. Hycote).

Another option entirely is to make the flag from thinly-rolled putty, lots of modellers use this for flags instead of a foil of some kind for the increased stiffness and resilience, but they can be prone to cracks if you don't handle them gingerly.

Brian despite the modern age overtaking us dinosaurs there is still hope in the toothpast tube.
I know most are plastic and the toothpaste taste like plastic.
However "Euthymol" has a tube of very soft metal which bends easily is reasonably thick and takes paint well if primed propely.
As an added bonus, you have the toothpaste.

Duh! Sorry, Brian, I called you "Steve". Too much multitasking....

I'm looking forward to seeing your piece as you go forward.

Prost!

Hi Brian,
I am sure I've seen a post, might have been on here! You could try your local dentist, the foil they peel off the x-ray sheets, never seen one but I would hazard a guess at A5/A4 size. It's an option.
cheers

I've used alumimum foil and successfully painted it with regular hobby enamels. The heavy variety of foil seems to work better than the regular household weight.

Brian, just remembered, if you have a handy printers he may have a few sgeets of "LithoPlate" which is a wonderful material for modelling. Lot of printers dont have any left but a proper small printers will still have some around.
Easy to cut, scissors, bends and shapes are instant and it takees paint well. Not too thick so would be good for flags.

I always use "anti-allergic sticking plaster" to cover the metal foil.
Texture is very similar to real cloth and you must only give a light coat of
putty or car-primer before painting. IT REALLY WORKS !!!!
Best regards from Spain.
