This is great. Now I see that the western movies are based on something.
For us European's it is awesome to see these pictures.
We know now that a whole way of living disapeared.

A great reference for figure modelling.

I used Google Earth to visit some of the places in the photos.
Very interesting to see some of the same settlements as they appear today.
One or two buildings still survive, and others with a lot of renovation.
 
Agreed! Well worth a look. I love the stagecoach pics and the one of the 3 miners. There's some great figure fodder in there!

Thank you Guy for taking the time to post these wonderful old photographs. These show how important the Ox was to the Western expansion of the USA before the arrival of the Rail road.
Megroot was right to mention Westerns as a source of reference, and off the top of my head the only Oxen I can remember seeing in a Western was the one ridden by Mungo in Blazing Saddles.
