For those interested in counterfactual history and fiction, you might like to read, "The Two Georges", by Harry Turtledove and Richard Dreyfus (yes, that Richard Dreyfus. "Hooper drives the boat, Chief"). It's set in 1976, celebrating the bicentennial of the conciliation between the Colonies and the mother country, in the North American Union, a dominion of the Crown. It's entertaining, as most of Turtledove's books are, though I think he and Dreyfus spend a little too much time talking about what their hero eats as he traverses the continent in pursuit of a shadowy terrorist group known as the Sons of Liberty.
